What makes IIMC MBAEX different from every other One Year MBA
Understanding why this program delivers exceptional career outcomes helps you position your application with the right emphasis.
1.
A Full MBA Degree. Not a Certificate
The IIM Calcutta MBAEx awards a Master of Business Administration degree — the same institution, the same faculty, the same Joka campus as the flagship two-year PGP. This is not an executive education certificate or a diploma. It is a full MBA from one of India's original three IIMs, delivered in one year of full-time residential study. When an employer reads IIM Calcutta on your resume, they do not ask which program. The credential carries completely.
2.
FT #53 Globally. Triple Crown Accredited. Rising
IIM Calcutta is ranked #53 globally by the Financial Times 2026 — up 8 places from #61 in 2025 — and #64 globally by QS 2026. It holds the Triple Crown accreditation: AMBA, AACSB, and EQUIS, placing it among fewer than 1% of business schools globally. For an executive making a one-year investment in their career, these are not vanity numbers — they are employer signals that open doors in consulting, banking, and global corporations that recruit directly from ranked programs.
3.
For Professionals with 5+ Years of Experience
The IIM Calcutta MBAEX Class of 2026 averaged 7.8 years of work experience. 47% had 5–7 years, 36% had 7–10 years, 18% had 10+ years. Previous employers include Microsoft, Siemens, Bosch, Accenture, Deloitte, TCS, Infosys, SBI, Barclays, SAP, and IndianOil. The cohort brings together professionals from IT, oil and gas, manufacturing, BFSI, consulting, defence, and the public sector — and the peer learning this enables is as valuable as the curriculum.
4.
Real Sector Pivots. Consistent Placement Track Record
The IIM Calcutta MBAEX Class of 2025 entered with Oil & Gas as the largest sector at 17.5%. They graduated with IT & ITES at 31.9% and Consulting at 18.3% of all placement outcomes. This is not marginal movement within the same function — it is documented sector transformation at scale across a full cohort. Average CTC reached ₹35 LPA. Highest was ₹125 LPA. Past recruiters include McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Amazon, Google, Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, ICICI Bank, Flipkart, and LTIMindtree.
5.
Six Terms. Live Industry Project. International Immersion
The MBAEx runs across six terms with a structured Live Industry Project and an International Immersion Programme (IIP) at a partner school abroad. Past cohorts have gone to ESADE Barcelona and SDA Bocconi Milan. Economy round-trip airfare and immersion expenses are included in the base program fee — the international component is not an add-on. The curriculum covers 15+ named subjects across strategy, finance, operations, marketing, economics, and technology, plus electives for specialisation.
6.
Being a CEO Series. Startup Garage. Lattice Conclave
The IIM Calcutta MBAEx year is not just academic. The Being a CEO Series brings seasoned CEOs to campus to share unfiltered perspectives on C-suite leadership. Startup Garage is a 72-hour entrepreneurship challenge where participants build pitch-ready ventures under a running clock. Lattice is the annual MBAEx business conclave where industry leaders, academics, and students converge. These are not optional enrichment activities — they are part of what the Joka experience means.
GOALISB PROCESS
How we build your IIMC MBAEX application
1.
Profile Audit
We assess your academic record, GMAT score, work experience profile, and career trajectory against the IIMC MBAEx selection criteria. The Class of 2026 averaged 7.8 years of experience and a GMAT of 696 — we tell you honestly where you stand, which round to target, and what the admissions panel will focus on given your specific background.
2.
Story Architecture
The MBAEx application requires a Statement of Purpose (SOP) and two letters of recommendation. The SOP is the only narrative element in the application — it carries all the weight that other programs distribute across multiple essays. Before writing begins, we identify the single thread that connects your professional journey, your leadership moments, and your post-MBA intent.
3.
Essay Development
One SOP, one chance. We develop multiple drafts with sharp editorial feedback, and work with you on briefing your recommenders so their letters reinforce your narrative rather than repeat your resume. Weak recommendation letters are one of the most common reasons strong profiles get waitlisted at IIMC — recommenders need specific guidance on what to address and what to leave out.
4.
Interview Preparation
Live mock interviews with IIMC-specific panel simulation. The MBAEx interview tests leadership credibility, clarity of post-MBA goals, and strategic thinking — not just career history. At an average experience level of 7–8 years, the panel expects you to have a perspective on your industry, not just a narrative of what you have done. We prepare you for that difference.

The IIMC MBAEX Selection Process
IIM Calcutta MBA EX Selection Process:
Stage 1: Application Screening: IIM Calcutta evaluates your GMAT score, academic record, work experience quality and trajectory, and SOP. There is no published minimum GMAT, but the Class of 2026 averaged 696. Applications are screened holistically — domain expertise, leadership evidence, and career clarity all factor in.
Stage 2: Personal Interview: Shortlisted candidates attend a personal interview with an IIM Calcutta faculty panel. The interview assesses strategic thinking, leadership credibility, post-MBA clarity, and cultural fit with IIM Calcutta's academic environment. Conducted in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, or on Zoom.
Waitlist note: If waitlisted in Round 1, expect a decision before Round 2 closes. IIMC does not hold a combined waitlist across all rounds — each round is resolved before the next one begins.

ESSAYS
IIM Calcutta MBAEx Statement of Purpose
The SOP: One Statement of Purpose. There is no word limit published, but the standard for a strong SOP is 600–800 words. This is the only narrative element in the MBAEx application. Every other component — GMAT score, academic record, work experience, recommendations — tells the admissions panel what you have done. The SOP is the only place where you tell them who you are, why this decision makes sense now, and what you intend to do with an IIM Calcutta MBA.
Letters of Recommendation: Two LORs required. Brief your recommenders with specific talking points that reinforce your SOP narrative.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
What is IIM Calcutta MBAEx?
The IIM Calcutta MBAEx is a one-year full-time residential MBA for executives. It is a complete Master of Business Administration degree, not a certificate or diploma offered by IIM Calcutta at its Joka campus in Kolkata. Designed for professionals with a minimum of 5 years of experience. The Class of 2026 has 90 students, average GMAT 696, average work experience 7.8 years, from employers including Microsoft, TCS, Siemens, SBI, Deloitte, and IndianOil. Ranked #53 globally by FT 2026 and Triple Crown accredited.
Is IIM Calcutta MBAEx a degree or a certificate?
It is a full MBA degree, Master of Business Administration. Not a Post Graduate Diploma, not an Executive Education certificate, not a distance learning qualification. A full-time residential MBA from IIM Calcutta, one of India's original three IIMs. The degree credential reads MBA (for Executives), awarded by IIM Calcutta. Employers, including global firms that recruit from ranked programs, recognise it as a full MBA from IIM Calcutta.
Is IIM Calcutta MBAEx worth it?
For a professional with 5–10 years of experience who wants to pivot sector, move from specialist to general management, or build the strategic framework their domain expertise lacks, yes. The Class of 2025 achieved ₹35 LPA average CTC. The program enables documented sector transitions at scale. The IIM Calcutta brand carries with every employer that recruits from ranked Indian business schools. Total fee is ₹33,50,000 including accommodation and international immersion airfare. For most candidates, the ROI case is straightforward within 2–3 years post-graduation.
What is the difference between IIM Calcutta MBAEx and IIM Calcutta PGP?
The IIM Calcutta PGP is the two-year flagship MBA for candidates entering through CAT, typically with 0–3 years of experience. The MBAEx is a one-year program for professionals with 5+ years of experience, admitted through GMAT. Both are full-time residential programs on the Joka campus with the same faculty. The degree says MBA (for Executives) on the MBAEx versus PGDM on the PGP. Both carry the IIM Calcutta brand equally with employers.
What is the difference between IIMC MBAEx and IIMA PGPX?
Both are one-year full-time residential MBA programs for executives at India's top two IIMs. IIMA PGPX accepts GMAT or GRE; IIMC MBAEx accepts only GMAT. IIMA PGPX is ranked higher on FT (IIMA ranks #27 globally in FT 2026 vs IIMC at #53). Both have similar fees. IIMC MBAEx has a larger cohort (90 vs ~75 at IIMA). For candidates with a strong GMAT and targeting roles in eastern India or sectors where IIM Calcutta has deeper alumni roots (PSU, energy, manufacturing), MBAEx may be the stronger fit. For global consulting and finance roles, both are equally respected.
ELIGIBILITY and GMAT
What GMAT score is needed for IIM Calcutta MBAEx?
The Class of 2026 averaged 696 with a maximum of 760. There is no published minimum. Based on class data, 680+ is a competitive range. The application is holistic — work experience quality, SOP strength, and recommendation letters all matter alongside GMAT score. A 710+ score with a weaker SOP will lose to a 680 with a compelling narrative and strong recommendations from credible recommenders.
Is GRE accepted for IIM Calcutta MBAEx?
No. IIM Calcutta accepts only GMAT for the MBAEx. GRE is not accepted under any circumstances. The GMAT program code is 9CP-HT-99. Scores must be from a test centre — online GMAT is not accepted.
How many years of work experience are required?
Minimum 5 years of full-time managerial or professional experience as of March 31, 2026. The Class of 2026 averaged 7.8 years — 47% had 5–7 years, 36% had 7–10 years, 18% had 10+ years. The program is designed for professionals who have established domain credibility and want to develop cross-functional leadership capability.
ADMISSIONS PROCESS
Is a 3-year bachelor's degree acceptable?
Yes. A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 15 years of formal education (10+2+3) qualifies. Three-year undergraduate degrees from Indian universities are fully acceptable.
When are the IIM Calcutta MBAEx 2026–27 deadlines?
Round 1: Open July 7 · Close August 20, 2025 · Interviews September 13–14, 2025. Round 2: Open August 21 · Close October 15, 2025 · Interviews November 8–9, 2025. Round 3: Open October 16 · Close November 26, 2025 · Interviews December 13–14, 2025. All rounds: Mumbai · New Delhi · Bangalore · Kolkata · Zoom. Online GMAT not accepted.
Which round should I apply in?
Round 1 if your application is ready — earlier interview slot and more time to manage the transition planning. Round 2 is equally competitive for admission — IIMC does not fill its class entirely from Round 1. Round 3 is available but leaves no buffer if waitlisted. Apply in the round where your application is genuinely strongest, not simply the earliest available.
What happens if I am waitlisted?
IIMC clears waitlists round by round. If waitlisted in Round 1, you will receive a decision before Round 2 closes. This is different from IIMB EPGP which holds a comprehensive waitlist across all rounds. At IIMC, the process is more transparent and time-bound.
What does the application require?
Valid GMAT score (test-centre only, not online) · Statement of Purpose · Two Letters of Recommendation · Academic transcripts · Work experience certificates. GMAT program code: 9CP-HT-99.
FEES, SCHOLARSHIPS and PLACEMENTS
What is the IIM Calcutta MBAEx fee?
₹33,50,000 total for 2025–26. Includes tuition, course material, on-campus accommodation, economy round-trip airfare for the international immersion, and incidental immersion expenses. Personal expenses — food, electricity, daily incidentals — are not included. Payment is in four installments: ₹2L on acceptance, ₹10L + ₹60,000 security deposit by March 15, ₹10L by July 21, ₹9L by November 24.
Does IIM Calcutta MBAEx offer scholarships?
IIM Calcutta does not publish a formal merit scholarship programme for MBAEx equivalent to ISB's or IIMA PGPX's scholarship structures. Confirm current availability directly with the IIMC MBAEx admissions office at the time of application.
Are education loans available?
Yes. Education loans are available through scheduled banks and NBFCs for IIM Calcutta programs. Most banks offer preferential rates for IIM admissions. Repayment typically begins after the moratorium period post-graduation. Confirm current terms with your bank at the time of application.
What is the ROI on the IIM Calcutta MBAEx fee?
The Class of 2025 averaged ₹35 LPA post-MBA. If your pre-MBA CTC was ₹15–18 LPA — which is realistic for a 5–7 year professional in IT, energy, or manufacturing — the fee of ₹33.5L is recovered within 18–24 months of the salary increment alone, before factoring in long-term career trajectory. For professionals targeting consulting or technology roles that were previously inaccessible from their domain, the career optionality the degree unlocks compounds significantly over 10–15 years.
What is life like at IIM Calcutta Joka campus?
IIM Calcutta's Joka campus is a full residential campus in south Kolkata — surrounded by nature, with lakes, greenery, and a campus environment that is distinctly different from an urban business school. The MBAEx cohort lives, studies, and networks on campus for the full year. Family accommodation is available for participants whose spouses and children join them. The campus experience — from the Being a CEO Series to Startup Garage to the Lattice conclave — is part of what the MBAEx year means in practice.
What extracurricular activities are part of IIM Calcutta MBAEx?
Startup Garage — 72-hour entrepreneurship challenge where participants build pitch-ready ventures under a running clock. Being a CEO Series — Seasoned CEOs share unfiltered perspectives on C-suite leadership, failure, and what it actually takes to operate at the top. Lattice — Annual MBAEx business conclave bringing together industry titans, emerging leaders, and academics for a full-day event. Leadership Talk — Industry trailblazers share lived experience directly with the cohort. Skill Workshops — Industry leaders step into the classroom to demonstrate, not just lecture. Confluence — Current and incoming batch connection event at the start of the year. Homecoming — Alumni return to Joka, giving the current batch a direct line to the MBAEx network in practice.
