  • 13 min read

At SDA Bocconi Asia Center, the International Executive Master in Business (IEMB) program is designed to let managers transform into leaders who hold top executive roles. SDA Bocconi’s IEMB program is an ideal program if you are looking to revisit an enriching academic environment and study alongside like-minded senior professionals and pursue an impactful Executive MBA for working professionals.

Deadlines for 2026-27 Intake

Early round 20th June 2026

First round 20th July  2026

Final round 20th August 2026

What The SDA Bocconi IEMB Programme Actually Is?

The IEMB is not an MBA. It's a Specialized Master's Programme (62 ECTS) under Italian university law, delivered by SDA Bocconi School of Management through its Mumbai Asia Center. The credential is European, the delivery is Indian, and the network is global. For the right candidate, that's a compelling trifecta.

SDA Bocconi IEMB Programme Architecture - What Stands Out

Format: 15 months, in-person once a month (Fri–Sat–Sun) in Mumbai, with selected online modules and a 2-week Milan immersion in July 2027.

The Milan week is the programme's crown jewel - Week 1 with IEMB peers, Week 2 as a joint concentration with the SDA Bocconi EMBA cohort. That's where the real global differentiation happens.

Curriculum flow is well-sequenced:

  • Onboarding (Oct 2026) — levels the playing field across diverse academic backgrounds

  • Foundation of Business (Oct 2026–Jun 2027) — 11 core courses covering strategy, finance, marketing, operations, leadership, data analytics, and macro

  • Milan Immersion (Jul 2027) — with four concentration tracks: Banking & Finance, Business & Sustainability, Digital, Made in Italy

  • Advanced Management (Aug–Nov 2027) — where the programme gets genuinely differentiated: Design Thinking, Blockchain & Fintech, Intelligent Technologies, Innovation & Corporate Entrepreneurship, Gulf Concentration

  • Capstone (Dec 2027) — individual project with real options: candidate's own business problem, CSR project, SDA Bocconi Case Collection contribution, or a startup business plan

The Gulf Concentration is an underappreciated signal — it speaks to where IEMB sees its candidates going career-wise.

SDA Bocconi IEMB Class Profile - Reading Between the Lines

  • Average age: 40 | Average work experience: 16.4 years - This is a senior cohort. Not mid-career. Late-career or pivot-to-leadership cohort.

  • 45% have 17+ years of experience - The programme is designed for people who have already "made it" functionally and now need the strategic and global scaffolding to lead at the top.

  • 55% engineering background - Classic Indian executive profile. The programme is well-aware of this and has built in Business Communication and Negotiation as Foundation courses, which signals they're deliberately rounding out technically-dominant professionals.

  • 35% Director/C-Suite, 10% VP - Nearly half the cohort is already in senior leadership. The classroom dynamic this creates is itself part of the learning.

  • Industry mix: Tech/IT (25%) and Industrial/Engineering/Manufacturing (25%) dominate, but Banking (5%) and Consulting (5%) are surprisingly thin — suggesting those verticals aren't yet fully aware of IEMB, which is an opportunity for the right candidate to stand out.

SDA Bocconi IEMB Alumni Outcomes — The Real Proof Points

The career progression data is where IEMB makes its strongest case:

Pre-IEMB

Post-IEMB

VP, Credit Suisse

Director, UBS

Chief People Officer, Future Group

Partner, Talent Element

Commander (Retd), Indian Navy

Head of Operations Digital Procurement, Sanofi

Sr. Director, Lendingkart

Chief Data Officer, Ecofy

Business Head, Servier

Global Marketing Director, Servier France

Chief Design Officer, Miko

VP Product Development, Hero Cycles

The pattern here is instructive: candidates are moving from India-centric roles to globally-scoped or globally-recognized ones. Dr. Arun Sharma moving to Global Marketing Director in France, and Dr. Prasad Phatak moving to BASF Germany — these are the outcomes that speak to international ambition.

Lingaraj Swarup Mishra's testimony is particularly powerful: "global recognition and an international job profile as a high-skilled expat." That's the IEMB value proposition distilled to one sentence.

The SDA Bocconi IEMB Executive Career Curriculum (ECC) - Underrated Feature

Most candidates will focus on the academic programme. Savvy applicants should pay attention to the ECC:

  • One-on-one coaching with globally certified coaches

  • Psychometric inventories (scientific self-awareness tools)

  • High-stakes decision simulations

  • Leadership through Sailing — experiential, memorable, and genuinely differentiating

This is where personal transformation happens alongside professional development. For anyone writing application essays, the ECC is a rich source of authentic motivation to articulate.

Admissions Intelligence — What the Process Signals

  • Minimum 9 years' experience + current full-time employment — They want practitioners, not career students

  • GMAT/GRE or internal SDA test — The internal test option reduces friction for senior candidates who haven't been in test-prep mode for decades

  • Letter of recommendation from current/earlier reporting manager — Notably not a peer or subordinate. They want managerial endorsement.

  • Personal interview — This is the most consequential step and likely where differentiation happens

  • Application fee: ₹4,600 — Nominal, intentional. Signals accessibility while maintaining a formal application framework.

Fee Structure — Positioning Consideration

₹21 Lakhs + GST, spread across four installments over 6 months. By Indian executive programme standards, this is positioned below ISB PGP and IIM executive programmes but above most other European school India-delivery programmes. The Milan immersion tuition is included; travel, visa, and accommodation are the candidate's responsibility — important to flag upfront.

Scholarship availability: Women in Leadership awards, merit-based waivers — these are worth pursuing and worth mentioning in essays for eligible candidates.

Strategic Positioning for Applicants

Who IEMB is genuinely right for:

  • Senior Indian professionals (12–20 years' experience) who need a global credential without disrupting their careers

  • Professionals eyeing international roles — particularly in Europe or the Gulf

  • Engineering and technology leaders who need the business language and leadership credibility to move into P&L or C-suite roles

  • Mid-career professionals in non-traditional sectors (defense, public sector, infrastructure) looking to transition into corporate leadership — the Navy-to-Sanofi trajectory is a compelling proof point

What a strong IEMB application essay needs to do:

  • Articulate the specific leadership gap IEMB addresses — not a generic "I want to be a better leader" but a precise, experience-grounded diagnosis

  • Connect the Milan immersion and concentration choice to a concrete post-programme aspiration

  • Demonstrate that the candidate brings something distinctive to a cohort of 40-year-old engineers from Accenture and Axis Bank

  • Show awareness of the Bocconi heritage and why a European lens on business matters for their specific career trajectory

SDA Bocconi IEMB

What is the format of the classes at SDA Bocconi IEMB? Is this program full time or part time?

At SDA Bocconi Asia Center, we have kept our course structure such that you can align the course with your current job. Over the 15-month duration of the program, in-person weekend only classes are conducted once every month (Friday-Saturday-Sunday) in Mumbai. Classes are conducted online the next alternate weekend, allowing the candidates to attend the sessions from a location convenient to them. The amalgamation of in-person classroom learning and online classes pushes one to develop the skills one needs.

Frequently Asked Questions - SDA Bocconi IEMB

What is the IEMB and how is it different from an MBA?

The International Executive Master in Business (IEMB) is a Specialized Master's Programme worth 62 ECTS under Italian university law, delivered by SDA Bocconi School of Management through its Mumbai Asia Center. Unlike a full-time MBA, the IEMB is designed for senior working professionals who continue in their current roles while studying. Classes run one weekend a month in Mumbai, supplemented by online sessions and a two-week immersion in Milan, Italy. The credential is European, the delivery is Indian, and the alumni network is global — a combination that very few programmes can offer at this career stage.

What is the IEMB programme structure and duration?

IEMB Edition 11 runs for 15 months, from October 2026 to December 2027. The programme is structured across three phases: the Foundation of Business stage covering strategy, finance, marketing, data analytics, and leadership (October 2026 to June 2027); a two-week Milan Immersion in July 2027 with specialised concentration options in Banking and Finance, Digital, Business and Sustainability, or Made in Italy; and an Advanced Management stage covering digital transformation, blockchain, intelligent technologies, and innovation (August to November 2027). The programme concludes with an individual Capstone Project in December 2027. In total, participants complete 42 classroom days in Mumbai and 14 days in Milan.

Who is eligible to apply for the IEMB at SDA Bocconi Asia Center?

The IEMB requires a minimum of nine years of full-time work experience, a recognised undergraduate degree in any discipline, English language proficiency, and current full-time employment. The programme is built for senior managers, directors, vice presidents, and C-suite executives who are already well-established in their careers and are seeking a global strategic perspective rather than a functional re-education. The average IEMB participant is 40 years old with 16.4 years of professional experience — this is not a programme designed for early-career professionals.

Is GMAT required for the IEMB application?

Candidates can either submit a GMAT or GRE score, or take the SDA Bocconi internal admissions test. The internal test option significantly reduces friction for senior executives who have not been in a standardised testing environment for several years. Beyond the test, the selection process includes an evaluation of academic and professional background, a letter of recommendation from a current or former reporting manager, and a personal interview — which is typically the most decisive step in the entire admissions process.

How competitive is IEMB admissions and what does SDA Bocconi look for in candidates?

SDA Bocconi selects IEMB candidates based on professional achievement, leadership potential, academic background, and how clearly the programme aligns with the candidate's career goals. The cohort profile — with 35 percent of participants at Director or C-suite level and 10 percent at VP level — signals that the school actively shapes a peer group where participants learn as much from each other as from the faculty. Candidates who stand out are those who can articulate precisely what leadership gap the IEMB addresses for them and why a globally-accredited European programme is the right vehicle for their next career move. Generic ambition statements do not differentiate in this process.

What is the IEMB tuition fee and what does it include?

The total tuition fee for the 2026 intake is Rs. 21 Lakhs plus GST, payable across four instalments between admission and April 2027. This fee covers the full 15-month academic programme, tuition for both Milan immersion weeks, all teaching materials, access to the Bocconi digital library, and mid-day meals during Mumbai modules. Travel, visa costs, and accommodation in Milan are the participant's responsibility. Educational loans are available through Credila, IDFC Bank, TATA Capital, Axis Bank, and Eduvanz. Merit-based scholarships and a Women in Leadership award for female candidates restarting their careers are also available for eligible applicants.

What happens during the Milan immersion and is it mandatory?

The two-week Milan immersion in July 2027 is the IEMB's most distinctive differentiator. The first week involves research-based classes alongside IEMB peers, company visits to Italian and European organisations, and direct interactions with senior business leaders. The second week is a personalised concentration module taken alongside international candidates from the full-time SDA Bocconi EMBA, offering participants direct exposure to a genuinely global executive cohort. Concentration options are Banking and Finance, Digital, Business and Sustainability, and Made in Italy. The immersion is an integral part of the IEMB experience and participants should plan their professional leave accordingly.

What career outcomes have IEMB alumni achieved after completing the programme?

IEMB alumni outcomes consistently show movement from India-centric roles to globally-scoped or internationally-recognised positions. Notable examples include a Business Development Manager at Mastercard becoming Director of Mastercard India; a Business Head at Servier becoming Global Marketing Director at Servier France; a Senior Director at Lendingkart becoming Chief Data Officer at Ecofy; and a retired Commander from the Indian Navy transitioning into Head of Operations Digital Procurement at Sanofi. The programme is particularly effective for professionals seeking cross-border credibility, C-suite transitions, or international mobility within their existing organisations or new ones.

Is IEMB internationally recognised? What are SDA Bocconi's global rankings?

SDA Bocconi holds the triple crown of business school accreditation — AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS — placing it among the top one percent of business schools globally. It is ranked first in Europe by Bloomberg Businessweek (2025), fourth globally for MBA by the Financial Times (2025), and fourteenth in Europe for Executive MBA by the Financial Times (2024). The broader Bocconi alumni community spans more than 150,000 graduates across 110 countries, with active alumni chapters in cities including New York, London, Dubai, Shanghai, Singapore, and Mumbai. For Indian professionals targeting global roles, this network delivers genuine international reach.

Can I pursue the IEMB while continuing in my current job?

Yes — and this is by design. The IEMB is structured specifically for working professionals who cannot pause their careers to study full-time. In-person sessions are confined to one weekend per month in Mumbai, with supplementary online sessions on weekday evenings and weekends. The programme explicitly requires current full-time employment as an admissions criterion, because participants bring live business challenges into the classroom — which directly enriches the learning environment for the entire cohort. The Milan immersion requires approximately two weeks of professional leave, which participants are advised to plan well in advance with their organisations.

What is the Executive Career Curriculum at IEMB and how does it benefit participants?

The Executive Career Curriculum (ECC) is an optional but high-value layer of the IEMB experience, designed to support individual career trajectories alongside the academic programme. It includes one-on-one coaching sessions with globally certified coaches, psychometric assessments to identify leadership style and personal growth levers, high-stakes decision simulations that reveal how participants perform under pressure, and a distinctive leadership development experience through sailing. All ECC activities run during evenings or on Saturdays to facilitate participation without disrupting the academic schedule. For senior professionals at career inflection points — pivoting sectors, targeting international roles, or moving from functional to enterprise leadership — the ECC can be as valuable as the academic curriculum itself.

How should I approach the IEMB personal interview?

The personal interview is the most consequential step in the IEMB admissions process. The selection panel is assessing whether your career trajectory, motivations, and leadership readiness genuinely align with what the programme offers — not whether you can narrate your CV fluently. The strongest candidates arrive with a specific, experience-grounded understanding of what they need to develop and why SDA Bocconi's framework — European in perspective, globally networked, and research-driven — addresses that need better than the available alternatives. Be prepared to speak to your leadership philosophy, a situation where you navigated real ambiguity, and what you will contribute to a cohort of peers who are as senior and as accomplished as you are.
