MBA in Australia for International Students 2027, Requirements, Costs, Visas and Jobs
An MBA in Australia for international students works best for one kind of applicant, a professional with three to six years of solid experience who wants to build a career in Australia or the wider Asia-Pacific and can fund a premium degree without leaning on part-time work. For that applicant, Australia offers compact full-time programmes, small cohorts, legal work rights while studying and a post-study work visa of up to two years.
It is not a low-cost route abroad, and it is not a guaranteed path to permanent residency. This guide sets out what the leading programmes require, what they really cost, how the post-study visa rules affect your choice of programme, and how GOALisB advises Indian applicants to decide.

MBA in Australia for International Students at a Glance
Four full-time programmes dominate the shortlist for most Indian applicants. Their published rules differ more than most applicants expect.
Programme | Duration | Minimum experience | GMAT or GRE | Latest tuition signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Melbourne Business School Full-time MBA | 2 years | 2 years | Normally required for international applicants, recent average 695+ | AUD 120,384 total for 2026 |
AGSM @ UNSW Full-Time MBA | 12 months | 2 years after the degree | One way to show academic strength, no published minimum | About AUD 83,500 to 88,500 for 2026, indicative |
University of Sydney MBA (Leadership and Enterprise) | 18 months | 3 years | Needed only if the academic record is below the threshold | Confirm the total with the school |
UQ Business School MBA | 1.5 years full time | 4 years, including 2 in management | Required for international applicants, minimum 550 | AUD 69,112 a year for 2026, indicative |
Fees change every year, so treat these as planning signals and ask each school for the total fee for your exact intake before you commit.
Who an Australian MBA Suits, and Who It Does Not
Australia is most compelling if you already have a credible professional base in technology, operations, engineering, healthcare, sales, finance, consulting or a family business, and you want the MBA to accelerate that path in Australia or the Asia-Pacific.
It is a weaker fit if your main goal is a guaranteed immigration outcome, a US-style internship and campus recruiting machine, investment banking or private equity without strong pre-MBA credentials, a degree funded mainly through part-time work, or a first postgraduate qualification straight after college. Graduates with under two years of experience are usually better served by a Master of Management, Business Analytics, Finance or Commerce, and our guide to a Master's degree in Australia covers those options.
Admission Requirements School by School
Melbourne Business School
MBS asks for a recognised undergraduate degree, a CV showing at least two years of professional experience, and a good GMAT, GMAT Focus or GRE score for the standard international route. The only stated test exemption is for Australian or New Zealand graduates who are not seeking a scholarship, so applicants with an Indian degree should plan to test. Recent students averaged a GMAT of 695 or higher. The application includes four personal statements of about 250 to 300 words, two professional referees and an interview.
AGSM @ UNSW
AGSM requires at least two years of full-time professional or managerial work completed after your undergraduate degree, so internships and work done during college do not count. Academic strength can be shown through strong grades from an Australian or top-ranked university, or through a strong GMAT or GRE score, and AGSM publishes no numerical minimum. Applicants submit three statements of about 250 words, two referee reports on AGSM's form and, if shortlisted, an interview.
University of Sydney
Sydney's 18-month MBA needs at least three years of relevant experience, a bachelor's degree with a credit average or a pass average backed by an approved admissions test, a statement of motivation of up to two pages, and a successful selection interview. The class size is capped, so the panel weighs what you will add to the class as much as your individual record.
University of Queensland
UQ has the strictest experience rule, at least four years of relevant full-time work including two years in a dedicated supervisory or management role over people or projects. International applicants need a GMAT of at least 550 and IELTS of 6.5 overall with no band below 6, or an accepted equivalent. Your CV and two signed work references must make the management component easy to verify.

GMAT, GRE and Work Experience Strategy for Indian Applicants
Treat the minimum experience as a floor rather than a target. Applying at exactly two years works only when the quality of that experience is unusually strong. With three or more years of real responsibility, a clear leadership story and a robust test score, you are better placed for both admission and scholarships.
Even where a test is not compulsory, a strong GMAT or GRE is the safest way for an Indian graduate to prove academic readiness, especially for AGSM and Sydney, and it often decides scholarship outcomes. Our pieces on GMAT waivers for MBA and on why the GMAT is rarely the only deciding factor explain how to weigh the test against the rest of your profile.
What an Australian MBA Really Costs
For a 2027 start, a reputable Australian MBA usually costs about AUD 85,000 to 125,000 in tuition, and a realistic all-in budget is often AUD 135,000 to 190,000 or more once living costs, health cover, visa charges, flights and a contingency reserve are added. That is roughly ₹75 lakh to ₹1.05 crore, depending on the city, programme length, exchange rate and scholarship.
Cost item | Indicative planning range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Tuition | AUD 83,500 to 121,000+ | Varies by school, duration and annual fee increases |
Living costs, Sydney | AUD 30,000 to 45,000 a year | Usually the most expensive MBA city |
Living costs, Melbourne | AUD 28,000 to 40,000 a year | Shared housing away from the campus core lowers costs |
Living costs, Brisbane | AUD 24,000 to 35,000 a year | Often cheaper, with a smaller employer base in some sectors |
Overseas Student Health Cover | AUD 1,500 to 3,500+ | Depends on policy length and dependants |
Flights, bond and settling in | AUD 4,000 to 10,000 | Rental bond creates a large upfront cash need |
Contingency and exchange-rate reserve | 10 to 15% of the total | Essential when borrowing in INR and paying in AUD |
As an example, a two-year Melbourne MBA with tuition of AUD 120,384, living costs of AUD 65,000 to 80,000 and AUD 15,000 to 25,000 for health cover, visa, relocation and contingency comes to roughly AUD 200,000 to 225,000, or about ₹1.1 to 1.25 crore. AGSM's 12-month programme costs less in tuition and lost salary, but a Sydney budget with a job-search reserve can still reach AUD 120,000 to 140,000 or more.
The largest cost is often the salary you give up while studying. Before deciding, model three scenarios, a job straight after graduation, a six-month search and a return to India, and compare them with the ROI framework we use for MBA decisions.
Scholarships and Funding
Scholarships can cut the cost materially, but most are partial. MBS assesses scholarships through the MBA application and offers named merit awards. AGSM lists partial and fully funded scholarships for Full-Time MBA candidates, including Global Reach, Women in Leadership, Academic Excellence and Leadership Excellence awards. Sydney offers the MBA Director's Scholarship, so check its current value for your intake. Strong test scores, academics, leadership and early applications all help.
Indian education loans can cover tuition and part of living costs, but lenders differ on collateral, amount, moratorium and interest. Plan repayments in INR at a conservative exchange rate. Our guides to MBA scholarships and funding options for a degree abroad go deeper, and international applicants can also look at the GOALisB Global Mentorship Scholarship.
Work Rights and the 485 Post-Study Visa
On a Student visa (subclass 500), you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. That helps with living costs but is not a funding plan for a premium MBA.
After graduation, the main route is the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Post-Higher Education Work stream, which typically gives a master's by coursework graduate two years of unrestricted work rights. You must generally be 35 or under, apply within six months of completing your degree, and meet the Australian study requirement of at least two academic years, or 92 CRICOS-registered weeks, completed in Australia over at least 16 calendar months. The extra two years that used to be available for select degrees ended on 1 July 2024.
MBA format | Likely 485 position | What to verify before enrolling |
|---|---|---|
2-year MBS Full-time MBA | Usually aligned with the 92-week rule | Exact CRICOS duration, confirmed in writing |
18-month University of Sydney MBA | More likely to qualify, subject to CRICOS registration | Whether the course alone meets 92 weeks |
12-month AGSM Full-Time MBA | May not meet the rule on its own | Whether the MBA Extension or another qualification creates a compliant pathway |
1.5-year UQ MBA | Potentially aligned, subject to CRICOS registration | Whether your specific study plan counts as 92 CRICOS weeks |
Home Affairs counts the standard CRICOS duration of the course, not the time you personally took, so a 52-week course does not become 92 weeks because you studied slowly. Before paying a deposit, ask the university's international office in writing whether your exact course code meets the 485 study requirement. Only Home Affairs decides individual visa outcomes, and a 485 visa gives work rights, not a job or permanent residency.
Jobs and Salaries After an MBA in Australia
Australia's MBA recruiting market is smaller and more relationship-led than the US or UK. Employers look first at your pre-MBA experience, transferable leadership, remaining visa validity and how well you network, so the degree magnifies a credible career story rather than replacing one.
Outcome data is thin and mostly school-reported, so read it carefully. In the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2026, AGSM alumni reported an average salary of US$154,233, about AUD 218,000, three years after graduating, a 69% increase on their pre-MBA pay. Ask every school for employment figures split by international students and by function, because headline averages hide wide variation.
The best odds usually come from an adjacent move. A technology project manager can target product operations, strategy or technology consulting, a commercial banker can target corporate banking or credit, and an engineer in energy or infrastructure can target project finance, operations or commercial strategy. Investment banking and private equity remain highly selective, and an MBA alone rarely opens them.

What Our International Admits Show
The applicants who convert top programmes abroad are the ones who choose schools on outcomes rather than rankings alone. Saransh Mittal, a Deloitte technology consultant, converted Cambridge Judge and HEC Paris and chose between them on post-MBA work location and visa feasibility, exactly the question an Australian MBA applicant must answer. Aditi Aggarwal built her NUS MBA application from a story bank of 30 to 40 introspection questions, and Vaibhav Khare used class-profile data to build a shortlist that converted UVA Darden. More admit journeys are on the GOALisB reviews page.
If you are weighing Australia against other destinations, our guides to an MBA in Canada, working in Singapore after an MBA and whether a US MBA is worth it in 2027 cover the same questions for those markets, and our list of top MBA programmes in Australia compares more schools.

MBS and AGSM require at least two years, the University of Sydney at least three, and UQ at least four including two years in a management role. Competitive applicants usually exceed these minimums.
Is the GMAT required for an MBA in Australia?
