MBA Consulting Jobs in India, What 1,228 Job Postings Reveal About the Real Market

6 min read

Every year, thousands of professionals begin their MBA applications with consulting as the post-MBA goal. The ambition is real. The market, as job postings actually show it, is more complicated than most applicants assume.

GOALisB captured 1,228 active consultant job postings across 28 countries, 1,000 of them in India, in October 2026. This is original research, not a summary of other people's surveys. What follows is what the data says about MBA consulting jobs in India, and what it should change about how you plan your MBA and your career goal.

MBA Consulting Jobs in India, Most Are Not Strategy Roles

In India, the word consultant is used for travel advisors, interior designers, fashion stylists, SAP database architects, visa agents and dermatologists. They all appear in the same search results in the same week.

Management and strategy consulting is under 10 percent of what Indian job boards call consulting.

Any salary average or competition figure drawn across the whole pool is therefore close to meaningless. A single consulting benchmark covers roles that pay ₹4 lakh and roles that pay ₹75 lakh. Professionals who build their understanding of consulting from this mixed pool are calibrating their plans to a fiction.

Where Management Consulting Firms Actually Hire

McKinsey has zero public postings in our dataset. BCG has seven. KPMG is the only Big 4 firm with meaningful India posting volume, at six roles. The most visible consulting employers on job boards are TCS, staffing aggregators and IT boutiques.

This is not a data quality problem. It is how the market works. For MBB and Big 4 advisory practices in India, hiring runs through campus drives and referrals, not public postings. For an MBA applicant targeting strategy consulting, the campus recruiting channel at a top programme is not one route among many. It is the primary route.

That is why consulting placement data matters so much when you choose a school. At ISB, business and strategy consulting accounted for 46 percent of the Class of 2026's placements, and McKinsey, Accenture, EY, Deloitte and Alvarez and Marsal each hired 10 or more students. Our analysis of the ISB placement report 2026 and our ISB vs IIM placements comparison show where that pipeline runs strongest.

What Consulting Firms Screen For

Artificial intelligence appears 17th and generative AI 18th, always as a modifier on domain expertise rather than a standalone requirement. Firms are not hiring AI generalists. They want a supply chain consultant who uses AI, or a finance transformation consultant who applies generative AI to real client work.

This surprises many applicants, who invest heavily in case practice and financial modelling and underinvest in evidence of stakeholder influence, problem framing and commercial judgement. Those behavioural signals are exactly what your MBA essays and interviews should prove. Our guide on which MBA is good for consulting covers how programmes build them.

Competition, Timing and Application Friction

The median applicant count for India consulting postings is 25, but that figure is an artefact of timing. Half the India roles showed exactly 25 applicants, the platform's marker for a freshly posted role, and 87 percent of roles were captured within seven days of going live. At the 75th percentile, roles already showed 69 applicants, and a meaningful number had reached the 200-applicant cap within the capture window.

The effective shelf life of a consulting posting in India is under a week. And 77 percent of postings required a full company portal application, with one-click apply available on only 23 percent. Applying at volume takes far more time than most candidates expect.

What Consulting Pays in India

Only 62 of 1,000 India postings disclosed compensation, so these figures are directional rather than benchmarks.

Deep SAP specialisation pays the highest median of any sub-category. For management consulting roles, a realistic reference range is ₹10 to 18 lakh depending on firm type, city and seniority. Post-MBA consulting roles recruited through campus, such as those at ISB, sit well above public posting medians, which is why the channel you enter through matters as much as the title. Our breakdown of the average salary after the ISB MBA shows the campus picture.

One Finding for Internationally Mobile Applicants

Of 228 global consulting postings outside India across 28 countries, one role offered visa sponsorship. For candidates hoping to work abroad after an MBA, the realistic consulting entry point is the return offer from a sponsored internship, not an external application. That makes a school's placement strength in your target country a central part of school selection.

What This Means for Your MBA Application

  1. Decide which consulting market you are targeting. Strategy and management consulting, SAP and ERP, and IT consulting are different careers with different entry routes.

  2. If your goal is strategy consulting, prioritise programmes with deep consulting campus recruitment, because that is where MBB and Big 4 advisory hire.

  3. Build your story around behavioural evidence, such as stakeholder influence, problem framing and change you led, not only analytical skill.

  4. Show AI as applied capability within a domain, not as general interest.

  5. Write a goal that names the type of consulting and why, which is what makes a career goals essay credible.

What Our Consulting-Track Admits Show

Srishti brought seven years of backend analytics at Accenture and a clear aim to move into client-facing consulting. She converted ISB PGP, IIMA PGPX and IIMB EPGP, and her goal was specific about the bridge.

Tanmay Verma, a consultant with five years of experience, turned an academic concern into a strength and converted ISB PGP with a scholarship.

Aditi Aggarwal, from KPMG and Accenture, built a story repository from 30 to 40 introspection questions and converted NUS MBA.
