How I aced the IIM Kozhikode PGP-BL admission process?

How I aced the IIM Kozhikode PGP-BL admission process? Saumil, a mechanical engineer from BITS Pilani with 4.5 years of product development experience at Whirlpool, shares his journey of converting IIM Kozhikode PGP-BL, switching from GMAT to GRE after three months of preparation, interviewing at both IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kozhikode with dramatically different experiences, and learning a counterintuitive lesson: the most dangerous thing you can do before an IIM interview is talk to the other candidates.

Product development professionals bring a distinctive and increasingly valued skillset to MBA classrooms: design thinking, innovation methodology, new product development process expertise, and the ability to take a concept from prototype to market launch. In a cohort dominated by consulting, analytics, and IT backgrounds, someone who has spent four years designing washers and dryers at Whirlpool — navigating supply chain constraints, manufacturing tolerances, and consumer preferences simultaneously — offers a perspective that few classmates can replicate.

Saumil leveraged this positioning effectively. His Whirlpool experience in product development and innovation, combined with a BITS Pilani mechanical engineering degree, created a profile that stood out for both its technical depth and its direct connection to consumer business outcomes. The result: an admit to IIM Kozhikode's PGP-BL, one of the few one-year MBA programmes in India that accommodates candidates with under five years of experience.

Why Did He Choose One-Year MBA Programmes with Less Than Five Years of Experience?

Saumil's school selection reveals a practical challenge that many applicants in the four-to-five-year experience band face.

"I was planning to apply only in India and targeting one-year programmes. With work experience of around four and a half years, there are very limited options. The options I had were ISB, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Kozhikode."

This is a genuine structural constraint. Most IIM one-year programmes — IIMB EPGP, IIMC PGPEX, IIML IPMX — target candidates with five or more years of experience, often preferring seven to ten years. For applicants in the four-to-five-year band, ISB PGP, IIM Ahmedabad PGPX, and IIM Kozhikode PGP-BL represent the realistic target schools.

"I was less interested in ISB just because the fees were high and the batch size was huge — around 800 people. I was more interested in IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kozhikode."

The batch size preference is a legitimate selection criterion that many applicants overlook. A cohort of 800 creates different peer dynamics than a cohort of 60-140. Saumil prioritised intimate learning environments where individual visibility to faculty and classmates would be higher.

Why Switch from GMAT to GRE Mid-Preparation — and How Do You Decide?

Saumil's test switch story validates a strategy that many applicants suspect is right but few act on decisively.

"I actually started my preparation with GMAT. I didn't know that GRE is accepted at par with GMAT in most colleges. The adaptive nature of GMAT's verbal was not kind of working for me — that is what I identified after spending around 3 months preparing for GMAT and giving mock tests. Then I switched to GRE."

Three months of GMAT preparation is enough data to make a decision. If your verbal scores are not improving despite consistent effort, the issue is likely format mismatch, not insufficient preparation. The GMAT's adaptive verbal section creates a specific pressure dynamic that penalises certain test-taking styles. The GRE's non-adaptive section-level format suits other cognitive approaches better.

"One thing I would like to tell everyone: just give it a try. Take mocks for GMAT as well as GRE. For GMAT, the mocks are available on the GMAT website. For GRE, they're available on ETS. Two tests are available for free. You can look for yourself what suits you best."

This advice should precede any test preparation commitment. A diagnostic mock of each exam — available free from official sources — takes four hours total and saves months of mismatch.

His GRE vocabulary strategy was intensive but systematic: "I referred the Barron book and there is an app called Quizlet with flashcards. I mugged up around 500 words in 45 days. I made flashcards, shuffled them, and reviewed them regularly."

"If you are targeting GRE and you are an Indian, vocab is one thing which is going to need more attention than everything else. If you've taken care of the vocab, you've already taken care of most of the sections where you might face a problem in the verbal."

How Were the IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kozhikode Interviews Different?

Saumil interviewed at both — and his contrasting experiences contain the most practical, least discussed interview advice in the entire GOALisB admit stories series.

IIM Ahmedabad PGPX interview: "I generally don't have nervousness about interviews, but somehow on that day I went to the IIM Ahmedabad campus and I was really nervous."

The nervousness was amplified by a specific environmental factor: "IIMs call you early — around two hours before the interview. There would be a lot of people sitting there. Don't indulge in a lot of conversation with everyone, because you are going to get nervous. You are going to get depressed listening to their stories — 'I applied last year, I didn't make it.' That would be a little depressing and would put you under pressure before you go into the interview room."

This is the single most underrated piece of IIM interview advice. The two-hour waiting period is a psychological minefield. Other candidates sharing their scores, their multiple attempts, their rejection stories — all of it creates comparison anxiety that directly degrades interview performance. Saumil's advice: say hello, then protect your mental state by sitting alone with your own preparation notes.

"IIM Ahmedabad has the extempore. The topics were simple, but out of nervousness I made some mistakes."

IIM Kozhikode PGP-BL interview: Armed with the IIMA lesson, Saumil adjusted his approach: "Taking these learnings, I did not indulge in much deeper conversations with everyone."

"Three things define the Kozhikode interview. First, 70% is from the essays you have written — the industry you are in, products you have worked on, technologies you have worked on, and your extracurricular activities. The rest 30% is general awareness — I was asked about pilots leaving Akasa Air. And the third thing is domain knowledge — I was from a mechanical engineering background, so a professor asked me about Newton's law of cooling and where you see it in the real world."

The domain knowledge questions are particularly important to flag. There was "no mention of anything like that in my essays or anywhere, but just because I was from a mechanical engineering background, that question came up."

"Brush up the basics of the domain or engineering field that you come from."

How Should Product Development Professionals Frame Their MBA Applications?

Saumil's application strategy offers a template for any manufacturing or product development professional.

"It's very important to introspect — what are your strengths, how you fit into the programme, what are the gaps. In my case, I had worked in product development — product development, innovation, design thinking. Those were unique about me, things I could contribute to the classroom."

"Highlight certain challenging projects you have taken up during your work. And it's more important to highlight the outputs — it's better to have quantitative parameters. Not always necessary, but it's better."

The two-part essay framework he describes: first, what you bring to the table (product development expertise, innovation methodology, design thinking). Second, what you seek from the programme (business strategy, general management, cross-functional leadership). This "give and get" structure directly addresses the admissions committee's core evaluation criteria: will this candidate add value to our cohort, and will our programme add value to this candidate's career?

What Was the Value of Professional Guidance in This Journey?

"What help I got from you was how to put that story in a structured way and how to present it to a B-school. The same story can be presented in multiple ways. What help I got was how to best portray your story — so that it's something which the B-school wants to look at, a story worth considering."

"Interview prep was good — I had two mock interviews, and I was well-prepared before going to the interview."

The "same story, multiple presentations" insight is crucial. A Whirlpool product development story can be told as a technical achievement narrative, a leadership narrative, a customer impact narrative, or an innovation narrative. Each framing resonates differently with different schools. The consultant's role is matching the framing to the school's evaluation priorities.

What Advice Does He Have for Future IIM Applicants from Manufacturing?

Get the test done by May or June. "If you have to apply again or improve your score, you have enough time. The first round for Kozhikode is somewhere in June — you need to get done with the test by March or April at least."

Take mocks of both GMAT and GRE before committing. "I switched after three months. Save yourself that time by taking diagnostic mocks of both exams first."

For GRE, vocabulary is the battleground. "If you've taken care of vocab, you've already taken care of most verbal challenges. Use flashcards, review daily, budget 45 days minimum."

Do not socialise in the IIM interview waiting room. "Protect your mental state. The two hours before the interview can destroy your confidence if you let other candidates' stories affect you."

Know your engineering fundamentals. "The panel can ask domain questions that have nothing to do with your essays. Brush up the basics."

Quantify your achievements wherever possible. "Quantitative parameters make your essays and interview answers concrete and memorable."

The IIM Kozhikode interview is 70% essay-based. "Know your own application inside out. The questions will come directly from what you have written."

Key Takeaways for Manufacturing and Product Development Professionals Targeting IIM One-Year MBA Programmes

  • Product development, design thinking, and innovation are powerful cohort-differentiating strengths. Highlight what you contribute to the classroom, not just what you want from it.

  • The four-to-five-year experience band has limited one-year programme options. ISB, IIMA, and IIM Kozhikode are the realistic targets. Apply to all three.

  • Switch from GMAT to GRE if verbal is not working after three months. Take diagnostic mocks of both exams before committing to either.

  • The IIM interview waiting room is a psychological trap. Say hello, then isolate with your own notes. Do not absorb other candidates' anxiety.

  • IIM Ahmedabad's extempore requires separate preparation. General awareness reading alone is insufficient.

  • 70% of IIM Kozhikode questions come from your essays and work experience. Own every word of your application.

  • Engineering domain knowledge can be tested unexpectedly. Newton's law of cooling is a real question that was asked. Brush up your fundamentals.
