Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode Scholarships

The IIM Kozhikode scholarships are provided with the aim of providing financial assistance to the students. Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode scholarships are offered to eligible candidates. The IIMK scholarships include IIMK Merit Scholarship and IIMK Need Based Financial Assistance (NBFA). Students can also avail scholarships from central government, state government and private organizations. The detailed IIMK scholarships and their eligibility criteria and the scholarship amount are given below.

  1. IIMK Merit Scholarship- This scholarship is awarded to the students of Post Graduate Programmes (PGP, PGPLSM and PGPFIN) first and second year students on the basis of their performance during one academic year from their CGPA. The number of scholarships awarded is in the ratio of one scholarship for every 20 students in the first and second year.

  2. IIMK Need Based Financial Assistance (NBFA)- Eligibility

  3. Gross annual family income should be less than or equal to Rs.8 lakhs.

  4. Availed an education loan from scheduled commercial banks.

  5. Produce the loan disbursement details in the prescribed format issued by the bank authorities for being eligible to apply for IIMK NBFA for second year.

  6. Should not have been involved in any act of indiscipline or misconduct at any time in the Institute.

Who Should Choose IIM Kozhikode and Which Program?

Choose PGP (Two-Year MBA) If:

Your Profile:

  • Fresh graduate or 0-3 years work experience

  • CAT score: 95+ percentile (realistically for final selection)

  • Strong academics: 75%+ in Class X, XII, graduation

  • Age: 21-25 typically

Your Goals:

  • Comprehensive management education across functions

  • Pivot from engineering/science to management roles

  • Access to top consulting firms, financial services, product management

  • Willingness to invest 2 years full-time

Career Outcomes You Can Expect:

  • Roles: Management consultant, investment banker, product manager, marketing manager, data analyst

  • Companies: BCG, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, HUL, Microsoft

  • Salary Range: ₹24-35 LPA for most, ₹40-72 LPA for top performers

Choose PGP-Finance If:

Your Profile:

  • Strong quantitative background (engineering, commerce with math, economics)

  • Specific interest in finance careers

  • CAT quant: 90+ percentile preferred

  • Work experience: 0-3 years, preferably in finance/banking

Your Goals:

  • Investment banking roles (equity research, M&A, valuations)

  • Corporate finance (CFO track, treasury, FP&A)

  • Wealth management and portfolio management

  • Deep technical finance expertise

Realistic Assessment: The PGP-Finance average salary (₹24.97 LPA) is slightly lower than the overall PGP average because it attracts finance-specific roles. However, the finance domain's highest package (₹81 LPA) came from this program, and long-term finance careers often show steeper growth curves.

Choose PGP-LSM If:

Your Profile:

  • Arts, humanities, liberal arts, psychology, or non-traditional background

  • Strong communication and creative thinking

  • Interest in people-facing roles

  • CAT verbal: 90+ percentile

Your Goals:

  • Marketing and brand management

  • Human resources and organizational development

  • Media, publishing, social enterprise

  • Hospitality and healthcare management

What's Different: Unlike traditional MBA programs that assume everyone wants finance or consulting, LSM recognizes that many leadership roles require empathy, communication, and cultural understanding. Students appreciated the interdisciplinary curriculum that included philosophy, psychology, and design thinking alongside core management.

Choose PGP-BL (One-Year Executive MBA) If:

Your Profile:

  • 28-35 years old with 4-10 years work experience

  • Mid-level manager seeking acceleration to senior leadership

  • Clear career trajectory (not exploring options)

  • Employer support or personal savings for ₹22.5 lakhs

Your Goals:

  • Move from functional role to general management

  • Transition from technical to business leadership

  • Pivot industries (engineering → consulting, banking → FMCG)

  • Build strategic thinking and cross-functional expertise

Trade-offs: The intensive one-year format means career disruption for 12 months. However, the opportunity cost is lower than two-year programs. Average salary (₹27.11 LPA) reflects the fact that most participants already had decent pre-MBA salaries; the value is in role elevation rather than pure salary jump.

Choose EPGP (Part-Time Executive MBA) If:

Your Profile:

  • 26-40 years old with 3-15 years work experience

  • Cannot afford full career break

  • Based in metro cities (Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune)

  • Employer sponsorship or ability to self-fund ₹15.95 lakhs

Your Goals:

  • Degree credential (many companies require MBA for VP+ roles)

  • Management fundamentals without career disruption

  • Networking with experienced cohort

  • Gradual skill upgrade over 2 years

Realistic Expectations: EPGP doesn't typically result in immediate salary jumps (you're not in the regular campus placement process). The value compounds over 3-5 years through promotions, role changes, and expanded opportunities. Many participants use the MBA to pivot internally within their companies or negotiate better offers elsewhere. Learn more about executive MBA programs from IIMs and how they compare.

Don't Choose IIM Kozhikode If:

Better Alternatives Exist For:

  • Ultra-premium consulting: If MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) is your only goal, IIM A/B/C have marginally higher placement rates in these firms, though IIMK also places 30-40 students in MBB annually

  • Severe budget constraints: Newer IIMs (Amritsar, Bodhgaya, Sirmaur) offer ₹8-12 lakh programs, though with different recruiter profiles. See our guide on one-year MBA programs in India for alternatives.

  • International careers immediately: If you want to work abroad right after MBA, consider programs with stronger international placement support (ISB, SP Jain, or overseas MBA programs)

  • Technology specialization: If you want purely tech roles, specialized MS programs (Data Science, AI) might offer better ROI than a general MBA

What This Means for Professionals in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi

IIM Kozhikode's Kerala location is often a concern for applicants from metro cities. Here's how to think about geographic factors:

For Bangalore Professionals

Advantages:

  • Relatively short travel (1.5-hour flight to Calicut/Kochi)

  • Many IIMK alumni networks active in Bangalore tech ecosystem

  • Strong placement connections with Bangalore-based companies (Amazon, Flipkart, Microsoft all recruit actively)

EPGP Option: Bangalore learning centers for the executive MBA make weekend participation feasible without relocation.

Placement Geography: In practice, 40-45% of IIMK graduates accept offers in Bangalore/Hyderabad tech corridor. The Kerala location doesn't limit your Bangalore career prospects.

For Mumbai Professionals

Considerations:

  • Mumbai dominates finance placements (where IIMK is strong), and most banking/finance offers require Mumbai relocation anyway

  • IIMK's Mumbai alumni chapter is very active

  • For PGP-BL or EPGP, the campus immersion modules (typically 4-6 weeks total) are manageable even from Mumbai

Finance Careers: The highest finance package (₹81 LPA) went to a Mumbai-based investment bank. IIMK's finance specialization is well-recognized by Mumbai's financial district.

For Delhi/NCR Professionals

Reality Check: Delhi-based consulting firms (McKinsey India, BCG Delhi, Bain Gurgaon) recruit from IIMK as actively as Mumbai/Bangalore. The location matters less than profile fit.

Executive MBA: Delhi learning centers support EPGP participation, though some modules require Kochi campus visits (typically during long weekends).

Kerala Preference

If you actively want to work in Kerala post-MBA:

  • Kerala-based companies (Muthoot, Federal Bank, Kerala State Electricity Board) recruit from IIMK

  • However, most MBA career paths naturally gravitate toward metro cities where corporate headquarters are located

  • IIMK's Kerala location is more about the immersive learning environment than post-MBA geography

The Bottom Line: IIM Kozhikode's Kerala campus is geographically "out of the way," but in practice, this affects your 1-2 years of study, not your 30-year career trajectory. The recruiter profile and alumni network are pan-India (and increasingly global).

Application Strategy: Maximizing Your Chances

For CAT Aspirants Targeting PGP

1. Score Target Setting (Work Backwards):

Realistic target based on category:

  • General: 97+ percentile for comfortable selection, 95+ for fighting chance

  • OBC-NCL/EWS: 90+ percentile

  • SC/ST: 80+ percentile

While official cutoffs are lower (85 for General), the competition is intense. What happens in practice: IIMK receives ~20,000 applications, shortlists ~1,000 for interviews, and finally selects ~490.

2. Balanced Sectional Performance:

Unlike some IIMs that allow compensation across sections, IIMK enforces sectional cutoffs strictly. A 99 percentile in VARC cannot compensate for 70 in QA.

Strategy:

  • Identify your weakest section 6 months before CAT

  • Focus disproportionate effort there (50% of prep time)

  • For LRDI, practice mixed sets (combining logic and data interpretation)

3. Academic Profile Strengthening:

Since Class X (15%), Class XII (20%), and academics (diversity: 10%) contribute 45% to Stage 2 shortlist:

  • If you're still in college: Maintain 70%+ CGPA

  • If you graduated: Focus on other differentiators (work quality, certifications)

  • Commerce/humanities students: Highlight academic diversity

4. Work Experience Strategy:

Work experience contributes only 5% to AIS but matters significantly in the interview. The sweet spot for work experience value without over-aging yourself:

  • 0-12 months: Focus on academic excellence

  • 13-24 months: Quality matters more than duration—leadership in projects, measurable impact

  • 25-36 months: Strong profile, but ensure clear career growth narrative

5. WAT & PI Preparation:

Common IIMK interview themes based on past candidate experiences:

  • Academic background deep-dives (especially for engineers switching to management)

  • Current affairs (economic policies, business news, technology trends)

  • Ethics and values scenarios

  • Goals and long-term vision clarity

  • "Why MBA? Why now? Why IIMK?" narrative

For comprehensive preparation strategies, review our guide on what is asked in IIM interviews.

Prepare:

  • 10-15 current affairs topics deeply (not just headlines)

  • Personal stories showing leadership, ethical decision-making, resilience

  • Honest acknowledgment of weaknesses with remediation plans

For Executive MBA Applicants

PGP-BL Strategy:

The personal statement and alternative resume are critical:

Personal Statement Tips:

  • Focus on specific transformation you seek (not generic "I want to be a better leader")

  • Quantify your impact in current role (revenue growth, team size, projects managed)

  • Show evidence of continuous learning despite full-time work

  • Articulate why this program at this stage of your career

Need help crafting compelling essays? Our MBA essay writing ultimate guide provides frameworks and examples.

Alternative Resume: Think beyond job titles. IIMK wants to understand you as a person:

  • Leadership outside work (community initiatives, sports, creative pursuits)

  • Challenges you've overcome

  • Unique perspectives you bring to classroom discussions

EPGP Strategy:

The EMAT (Executive Management Aptitude Test) is IIMK-designed, less competitive than CAT:

  • Quantitative, reasoning, and verbal sections

  • Difficulty level: Between CAT and GMAT

  • Cutoffs: 35% for General (much more accessible than CAT's 85 percentile equivalent)

If you have CAT (75+)/GMAT (700+)/GRE (solid scores), you skip EMAT. Many candidates take EMAT after full-time work, finding it manageable with 2-3 months focused preparation.

Common Application Mistakes

What I See Often:

  1. Over-optimizing for one profile type: Candidates assume IIMK only wants consultants or finance professionals. Reality: The batch is deliberately diverse (54% engineers, but also 26% commerce, 15% arts).

  2. Ignoring sectional cutoffs: Scoring 99 overall but 70 in one section is an instant rejection at Stage 1.

  3. Generic interview preparation: Candidates prepare the same answers as every other MBA aspirant. IIMK panels value authenticity and specific, personal narratives.

  4. Underestimating academic profile impact: Assuming stellar CAT scores compensate for weak Class X/XII or graduation marks. They don't—academic profile is 45% of shortlist score.

  5. Neglecting the "Why IIMK?" question: Many applicants can't articulate what's specific about IIMK versus other IIMs. Research the liberal studies focus, campus culture, specific faculty, alumni outcomes.

FAQs About IIM Kozhikode MBA Programs

Q: Is IIM Kozhikode worth it compared to newer IIMs with lower fees?

Yes, for most profiles. While newer IIMs (post-2015) offer ₹8-12 lakh programs, IIMK's placement outcomes justify the ₹23.5 lakh investment. The ₹28 LPA average salary versus ₹14-16 LPA at newer IIMs means you recover the fee difference within 12-18 months. However, if budget is a severe constraint and you're confident in your ability to build a career with less institutional support, newer IIMs can work.

Q: How does IIMK compare to IIM A/B/C?

IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta have marginally higher average packages (₹33-35 LPA versus IIMK's ₹28 LPA) and slightly stronger brand equity with certain recruiters. However, IIMK is meaningfully cheaper (₹23.5L versus ₹28-33L for A/B/C), offers better ROI, and places 100% of students. For most career goals (consulting, finance, tech, marketing), IIMK outcomes are comparable. For a detailed comparison between top IIMs, see ISB vs IIM Bangalore analysis. Choose A/B/C if you're specifically targeting ultra-premium roles or have received admission to both (where brand marginal value matters).

Q: Can I get into IIM Kozhikode with a 90 percentile in CAT?

Unlikely for General category; possible for OBC-NCL/EWS (where 90 is competitive) and SC/ST (where 80+ is solid). For General, while the official cutoff is 85, the actual final selection percentiles average 97+. If you scored 90, apply and prepare exceptionally well for WAT-PI to compensate, but also apply to newer IIMs where 90 percentile has higher success rates.

Q: Is the Kerala location a disadvantage for placements?

No. Recruiters travel to campus (or conduct virtual processes), and the final placement outcomes don't depend on geography. In fact, the Kerala campus provides an immersive environment free from metro-city distractions. Post-MBA, most graduates relocate to Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, or overseas based on job offers, not campus location.

Q: Should I choose PGP-Finance or general PGP if I want a finance career?

If you're certain about finance and have strong quantitative skills, PGP-Finance offers deeper technical training and a cohort of similarly focused peers. However, general PGP also allows finance specialization through electives and places many students in finance roles. The PGP-Finance label can be an advantage for specific roles (equity research, investment banking) but isn't necessary for corporate finance or general management with finance focus.

Q: Is IIMK's one-year PGP-BL equivalent to ISB's PGP?

Similar but different. Both are one-year residential programs for experienced professionals. ISB has a higher average salary (₹34 LPA versus IIMK's ₹27 LPA for PGP-BL) and stronger international brand, but also costs more (₹41 lakhs versus ₹22.5 lakhs). IIMK PGP-BL offers better ROI and is more feasible for Indian professionals without international career plans. For an in-depth comparison, read our ISB vs IIM Calcutta placement analysis. If you have admits to both, choose based on career geography (international: ISB; India-focused: IIMK) and budget.

Q: Can I get a scholarship at IIM Kozhikode?

Yes. Merit scholarships (1 per 20 students based on academic performance during the program) and Need-Based Financial Assistance (for family income ≤₹8 lakhs with education loan) are available. Additionally, many nationalized banks offer education loans at favorable rates (8.5-11% interest) for IIM programs.

Q: How difficult is it to maintain good academics at IIMK?

IIMK follows a relative grading system. Approximately 10-15% of students struggle academically (bottom of the curve), 70% perform adequately, and 15-20% excel. The trimester system (6 terms in 2 years) is intense, with continuous assessments, case preparations, and group projects. In practice, most students who put in consistent effort (50-60 hours per week including classes, assignments, prep) maintain B/B+ grades. The real challenge is balancing academics with club activities, networking, and job preparation.

Q: What is the typical day like for a PGP student at IIMK?

Typical Schedule (varies by term):

  • 8:00 AM: Classes begin (2-3 sessions before lunch)

  • 1:00 PM: Lunch break, club activities, committee work

  • 2:30 PM: Afternoon classes (1-2 sessions)

  • 5:00 PM: Case discussions, group project work, guest lectures

  • 7:00 PM: Dinner

  • 8:00 PM onwards: Individual study, club meetings, sports, networking events

  • 11:00 PM - 1:00 AM: Additional preparation for next day's cases, assignments

Weekends include recruiting activities, committee events, and personal time.

Q: Does IIM Kozhikode accept GMAT or only CAT?

For PGP-Finance and PGP-LSM, IIMK accepts CAT, GMAT, and GRE. For the flagship PGP, only CAT is accepted. For executive programs (PGP-BL, EPGP), CAT, GMAT, and GRE are all valid, or you can take IIMK's EMAT.

Q: What is the average age of students in PGP versus PGP-BL?

  • PGP: 22-25 years (median 23), with 31% freshers and 35% having 1-24 months experience

  • PGP-BL: 28-35 years (median 31), minimum 4 years work experience required

Q: How important is extracurricular profile for IIMK admission?

Moderate importance. While not explicitly weighted in the Stage 2 AIS formula, extracurriculars matter in:

  • Resume score (10% in final selection)

  • Interview discussions (panelists probe for leadership, teamwork, initiative)

  • Post-admission scholarship and award eligibility

Competitive sports at state/national level, significant social impact work, or creative achievements (publications, performances) strengthen your profile. However, manufactured "resume padding" (joining 10 clubs superficially) doesn't help.

Q: Can I work during the EPGP program?

Yes, that's the design. EPGP is structured for working professionals with weekend and evening classes via interactive online platforms, supplemented by campus immersion modules (typically 1-2 weeks per term). Most participants continue full-time employment, though many negotiate flexible arrangements with employers during intensive modules.

What You Should Do Next

If you're seriously considering IIM Kozhikode, here's your action plan:

For CAT Aspirants (Targeting PGP, PGP-Finance, or PGP-LSM)

Step 1: Assess Current Position (Today)

  • Take a full-length CAT mock test to baseline your score

  • Calculate your Class X, XII, and graduation percentages

  • List your work experience (if any) with quantified achievements

Step 2: Create Study Plan (This Week)

  • If CAT is 6+ months away: Build fundamentals in weak sections

  • If CAT is 2-3 months away: Focus on sectional tests and time management

  • If CAT is behind you: Prepare WAT-PI with current affairs, ethics cases, personal stories

Check our CAT exam date and preparation guide for the latest timeline and strategies.

Step 3: Understand Full Financial Picture (This Month)

  • Research education loan options (nationalized banks, private lenders)

  • Calculate total cost (₹26 lakhs for PGP including living costs)

  • Explore scholarship eligibility (family income, merit criteria)

Step 4: Visit Campus or Attend Virtual Events (Optional)

  • IIMK hosts open houses, alumni panels, and admission webinars

  • Connect with current students via LinkedIn (message 5-10 people with specific questions)

Step 5: Apply (When CAT Results Release)

  • Application typically opens early January, closes mid-January

  • Prepare resume, essays (if required in application), photograph

  • Apply to multiple IIMs simultaneously (application processes overlap)

For detailed application strategies across programs, read our MBA admission process guide.

For Working Professionals (Targeting PGP-BL or EPGP)

Step 1: Clarify Career Goals (This Week)

  • Write down specific career outcomes you seek from MBA (role change, industry shift, skill gaps)

  • Assess whether one-year (PGP-BL: career break) or two-year (EPGP: part-time) fits better

  • Calculate opportunity cost (lost salary for PGP-BL versus continued work for EPGP)

Step 2: Test Readiness (This Month)

  • If pursuing PGP-BL: Take CAT/GMAT/GRE (or register for upcoming dates)

  • If pursuing EPGP: Prepare for EMAT (or leverage existing CAT/GMAT/GRE scores)

  • Tip: GMAT (700) or GRE (320) can be easier for working professionals than high CAT percentiles

Step 3: Build Application Materials (Next 2 Months)

  • Draft personal statement (500-800 words on career journey, goals, why IIMK)

  • Update resume highlighting leadership, impact, and progression

  • Request recommendations (for programs requiring them)

Step 4: Financial Planning (Next 3 Months)

  • Explore employer sponsorship (many companies sponsor PGP-BL/EPGP with service bonds)

  • Research education loans (some banks have special schemes for executive MBA)

  • Budget for living costs if relocating (PGP-BL) or travel costs (EPGP campus modules)

Step 5: Network Strategically (Ongoing)

  • Join IIMK alumni groups on LinkedIn

  • Attend IIMK admission events or webinars

  • Speak with PGP-BL/EPGP alumni to understand real experience versus marketing materials
