Why MBA Mock Interviews Matter More in India Than Anywhere Else
Every year, I watch shortlisted candidates arrive at their ISB or IIM interview having done extensive preparation, and still struggle. Not because they lack substance. Because the preparation they did had no resemblance to what the actual interview demands. A well-run MBA mock interview is the most reliable way to close that gap.

That gap is precisely what a structured mock interview programme is designed to close. But to understand why it matters so much for Indian MBA applicants specifically, you need to understand what these interviews are actually testing, and how different they are from what most people assume.

What the ISB and IIM Interview Panels Are Actually Evaluating
The ISB PGP interview is a 25 to 30 minute conversation conducted by a panel that typically includes two or three members drawn from senior admissions officers and ISB alumni. The panel reads your application before walking in. They are not exploring your profile for the first time. They are probing it.
For the 2027 intake, ISB added a significant new component. Candidates now arrive 45 minutes before their interview and complete a 20-minute timed essay test on their own device, writing two short essays on business topics before the panel interview begins. The entire process takes close to two hours. This change makes ISB's process substantially different from what most prep material describes, and it makes undirected practice genuinely risky.
IIM executive programmes have their own distinct formats. The IIMA PGPX interview opens with an extempore discussion where a candidate picks up a topic and speaks to the panel before the formal interview begins. IIMB EPGP combines a written ability test with a personal interview conducted by faculty and alumni. IIM Calcutta's MBAEx focuses on the personal interview with a mixed panel of faculty and alumni. IIM Lucknow's IPMX includes a WAT component with a 10 percent weightage in the final selection score.
Each format tests something slightly different. And none of them rewards generic interview training.
The Problem With Practising Without a Mirror
Most candidates prepare by rehearsing answers to anticipated questions. They memorise their career goals articulation. They run through their leadership examples. They ask a friend or colleague to ask them a few questions.
This works up to a point. The problem is that it creates fluency without calibration. A candidate can become very comfortable giving an answer that is technically correct but completely misses what the panel is listening for.
Three things regularly go wrong when preparation lacks a realistic simulation.
The answer is too long. In a 25 to 30 minute interview with multiple themes to cover, an answer that runs four minutes on a single question is not thoroughness. It is a signal that the candidate cannot read the room or manage a professional conversation efficiently. This is one of the most common mistakes among well-prepared candidates who have rehearsed extensively on their own.
The goals narrative has not been tested under pressure. Goals are the central question of any ISB or IIM executive interview. The panel is not just checking whether your goals are plausible. They are checking whether you can defend them when challenged, pivot when the questioning turns technical, and maintain composure when a panelist disagrees. A rehearsed answer and a stress-tested answer are entirely different things.
The writing test catches candidates off guard. ISB's new essay component is not evaluated in isolation. The panelists receive your essays before the conversation begins. Whatever you write in that 20-minute window frames how they enter the interview. A candidate who walks in having never practised timed essay writing under real conditions is starting the interview at a disadvantage before a single question is asked.
What a Structured Mock Interview Programme Should Actually Cover
A mock interview is only as useful as its specificity. Generic interview coaching that is not built around the actual format of the school you are applying to can give candidates false confidence.
At GOALisB, the mock interview structure for ISB applicants includes the writing test component, since ISB introduced this for the 2027 intake. We run the session under the same conditions, including the time constraint and the instruction that the essays go to the panel first. That single addition changes how candidates approach the conversation that follows.
For IIM executive programmes, the preparation is format-specific. The IIMA PGPX extempore is a very different skill from the IIMB EPGP written ability test, even though both are pre-interview components. Mixing preparation for one into practice for another produces confusion, not competence.
Beyond format, there are four things that structured preparation needs to build.
Profile coherence under questioning. Your written application makes a set of claims about who you are, what you have done, and where you are going. The panel will probe the gaps between those claims. Mock interviews surface the inconsistencies in your narrative before the actual interview does.
Pressure tolerance without defensiveness. Strong panels at ISB and IIM Ahmedabad PGPX frequently challenge candidates on their goals, their sector choices, and their assessment of their own limitations. A candidate who has never been challenged under real conditions tends to become either defensive or deferential. Neither is what the panel is looking for.
The ability to ask a good question. Every ISB and IIM interview ends with an invitation for the candidate to ask the panel something. Most candidates treat this as a formality. Practised candidates treat it as another opportunity to demonstrate how they think. The distinction is visible immediately.
Authentic delivery rather than rehearsed performance. This is harder to build than it sounds. When you have over-rehearsed a story, you deliver it rather than tell it. Panels with the experience of having interviewed hundreds of candidates can hear the difference within two sentences. Good mock interview feedback targets this specifically.

How Many Mock Sessions Does a Candidate Actually Need
There is no universal number, but for ISB and IIM executive programmes, I typically recommend a minimum of two structured sessions for candidates who have a reasonably strong profile and clear goals, and three to four for reapplicants or candidates whose goals narrative has been through significant revision during the application process.
The first session is diagnostic. You discover what you do not know about your own answers, where you are too long, where you are too thin, and how your body language and pacing land with someone who is evaluating you seriously.
The second session is correctional. You implement the feedback from session one and run the simulation again. This is where the actual improvement happens, because you are now practising a better version rather than reinforcing the same version repeatedly.
A third session, if needed, focuses on edge cases, the difficult questions you are still not comfortable with, the what-if scenarios the panel might raise, the stress tests on your goals and your leadership claims.
The Specific Formats You Need to Know Before You Walk In
For candidates preparing for the 2026 to 2027 admissions cycle, here is the verified information on interview formats at the key Indian programmes.
ISB PGP involves arriving 45 minutes early, completing two short timed essays in 20 minutes on your own device, followed by a 25 to 30 minute panel interview. The total process is approximately two hours. The panel typically has two to three members including ISB alumni.
IIMA PGPX includes an extempore discussion where a topic is drawn on the spot, followed by a personal interview by a faculty panel. The interview duration is approximately 30 minutes. The panel probes goals, leadership claims, and academic or industry depth.
IIMB EPGP combines a written ability test with a personal interview conducted by a panel of faculty and alumni.
IIM Calcutta MBAEx is a personal interview with a mixed panel of faculty and alumni, focused on profile evaluation and goal clarity.
IIM Lucknow IPMX includes a WAT stage with a 10 percent weight in the final selection composite, followed by a personal interview.
Knowing these formats is not optional preparation. It is the starting point.
Who Should Conduct Your MBA Mock Interview
The most important variable in a mock interview is the quality of the feedback, not the volume of the practice. Practising ten times with someone who does not know what the ISB panel is evaluating produces ten repetitions of the same mistake.
For 17 years, across 500 plus admits to ISB, IIM Ahmedabad, INSEAD, LBS, Cambridge, and other programmes, the pattern I have seen consistently is that candidates who walk into their interview having had their narrative tested by someone who has sat across from these panels, who knows what these schools are measuring and what they are not, perform differently from those who have practised in a vacuum.
It is not about giving you better answers. It is about helping you understand your own application well enough that you can speak from it, not just about it.
Getting Started With Interview Preparation
ISB Round 1 shortlists for the 2027 intake typically begin arriving in late October and November. IIM executive programme interviews run across November through February. If you have been shortlisted, or are expecting a shortlist, the time to begin structured preparation is now, not the week before the interview date.
GOALisB's mock interview programme for ISB and IIM executive programmes covers the full format including the ISB writing test component, WAT preparation for IIM programmes, and structured feedback on profile coherence and goals articulation.

What Our Admits Learned in the Interview Room
The case for format-specific preparation is clearest in the experiences of candidates who have just been through these panels.
Dhritiman Mitra, a Business Manager at Myntra with 5.5 years across analytics consulting and e-commerce, interviewed at all three top IIMs and found each panel strikingly different, including an IIMA interview he described as completely out of syllabus. He converted IIMA PGPX. Preparing for one generic interview would not have covered three different evaluation styles.
Mohit Vyas, an R&D engineer whose career spans Collins Aerospace, Airbus and the Mercedes-Benz EV programme, found his ISB interview was a genuine conversation. The panel cared more about the business implications of Boeing's safety failures and Mercedes's EV strategy than about technical specifications.
Tanmay Verma, a consultant with five years of experience, built an Excel-based preparation system by deconstructing his mock interview recordings, and converted ISB PGP with a scholarship.
As Vikas Jha, now at IIMB EPGP, put it in his review, his actual IIM interview mirrored the mock sessions. More admit experiences are on the GOALisB reviews page.
