What is the GMAT Exam for?

GMAT Exam (Graduate Management Admission Test)

Overview & Value Proposition: The GMAT is a global MBA entrance exam, administered by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council). It is required (or highly preferred) by virtually all top international B-schools and many premier Indian programs (especially for executive or full-time MBAs). Over 7,000 programs worldwide accept GMAT scores. In India, GMAT is accepted at 140+ programs (mba.com) including IIMs (in limited seats/exchange programs), ISB Hyderabad, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI Gurgaon, Great Lakes (Chennai/Gurgaon), and more. GMAT Focus Edition Format & Structure:

The new GMAT Focus Edition (since 2023) has 3 sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and a combined Data Insights section (which replaces the old Integrated Reasoning). Each section is 45 minutes (135 minutes total).


The GMAT exam has 64 questions in total (Quant ~ 23, Verbal ~ 21, Data Insights ~ 20). It is fully computer-adaptive at the question level. There is no separate Essay section in the Focus GMAT (older GMAT had AWA, but Focus GMAT has eliminated it).


Eligibility: Any candidate 18+ can take the GMAT (13–17 year-olds require parental consent). There is no specific degree requirement to register, but admission to programs usually requires a bachelor’s degree.


Scoring: GMAT scores range from 205 to 805, in 5-point increments. Each section (Quant, Verbal, Data Insights) yields a score from 60–90 which combine (plus a base offset) to give the total. The average GMAT is ~560; 700+ is very competitive for top programs.


Important Dates & Fees (2025): GMAT is offered year-round at global test centers (and online). You schedule an appointment via mba.com. In India, the fee is about USD 275 (~₹23,200) for a test-center exam, or USD 300 (~₹25,400) for the online version. Scores are valid for 5 years.


Top B-schools: GMAT is accepted by virtually all leading business schools. Top Indian adopters include IIMs (especially for their Executive or PGPX programs), Indian School of Business, XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, Great Lakes Chennai, and others. What is the GRE exam used for?

GRE Exam (Graduate Record Examinations) or the GRE General Test is a worldwide graduate admissions exam (by ETS) accepted by thousands of graduate and MBA programs. Over 1,300 business schools (and many specialized master’s programs) accept GRE scores for MBA admission (ets.org). Notably, many top U.S. and global MBA programs (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, INSEAD, etc.) allow GRE in place of GMAT. GRE is also used for other post-grad degrees, so it is useful if you want to keep options open.


GRE Exam Format & Structure:

The GRE General Test has 3 sections: one Analytical Writing task (30 minutes), two Verbal Reasoning sections (total 27 questions, 41 minutes), and two Quantitative Reasoning sections (total 27 questions, 47 minutes). Total exam time is about 1 hour 58 minutes (not including breaks). Verbal and Quant are scored 130–170 each; Writing is scored 0–6. (GRE is section-adaptive: difficulty of Section 2 depends on performance in Section 1.)


Eligibility: Any graduate (or final-year) can take the GRE. There is no age limit or citizenship restriction.

Scoring: The total score is 260–340 (sum of Verbal+Quant). Many MBA programs consider the combined score and the percentiles. A competitive GRE score is usually ≥320, but exact requirements vary.

What is the NMAT exam for?

NMAT Exam (by GMAC)

NMAT is a self-scheduling MBA entrance test by GMAC, originally for NMIMS Mumbai’s MBA programs. Now 50+ programs accept NMAT scores, including NMIMS, TAPMI Manipal, Xavier Institute of Management (XIMB), KJ Somaiya (Mumbai), Great Lakes (Chennai/Gurgaon), and even SDA Bocconi’s Mumbai programs. NMAT allows candidates to take the exam multiple times (3 attempts in a defined window), making it flexible.


Format & Structure: NMAT is a computer-based exam with 108 questions in 120 minutes. It has 3 sections: Language Skills (Verbal), Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning (with Data Interpretation). You can set the order of sections once. The marking scheme is straightforward: +1 for each correct answer, no penalty for wrong answers. Each section has its own time limit (totaling 2 hours).


NMAT Exam Eligibility: Typically, candidates need a bachelor’s degree (with 50% or above) to apply. There is no age or work-experience requirement.


NMAT Scoring: NMAT scores are reported as percentiles (normalized). In 2025, NMAT does not publish percentiles; cutoffs depend on scaled scores.


NMAT Exam Important Dates & Fees (2025):

NMAT 2025 registration opens on Aug 1, 2025 and closes Oct 10, 2025.

The exam window is Nov 5–Dec 19, 2025 (candidates choose their slot). The application fee is ₹3,000 + taxes. Candidates may schedule multiple attempts during the window; only the best score counts for admissions.


Top B-schools: The most prominent NMAT acceptor is NMIMS Mumbai (which also has its own NMIMS NMAT quota and has recently introduced separate tests). What is the Executive Assessment?

The Executive Assessment is a GMAC-designed exam for Executive MBA candidates and other experienced professionals. Many top EMBA programs accept EA in lieu of GMAT/GRE. It’s tailored for working professionals (often with ≥5–10 years’ experience) and shorter than GMAT. Over 80+ global programs accept EA scores, including leading EMBA tracks at Chicago Booth, Columbia, Cambridge Judge, INSEAD, Kellogg, MIT Sloan, and others.


Format & Structure: The EA is a 90-minute CBT with 3 sections: Integrated Reasoning (IR), Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Each section is 30 minutes. There are 40 questions total: 12 IR, 14 Verbal, 14 Quant. The test is adaptive by stage: each section has 2 equal parts (“stages”) of questions, and performance in Stage 1 of a section influences the difficulty of Stage 2.


Eligibility: Executive MBA programs usually look for significant work experience (often 5–10 years), but there’s no formal work-ex min for the EA itself. Applicants typically have undergraduate degrees as well.


Scoring: Each section is scored 0–20, and the total EA score is on a 100–200 scale. (In practice, total scores tend to fall between ~126 and 174). All sections carry equal weight. There is no analytical writing component, and IR is included in scoring (unlike GMAT Focus which merged IR).


Important Dates & Fees: EA is offered year-round by appointment (online or at test centers). The registration fee is US$350 (plus taxes) mba.com. There are no fixed “exam dates”; candidates choose any available slot.


Top B-schools: Many leading Executive MBA programs accept EA. Examples include Chicago Booth (Evening/Weekend/EMBA), Columbia EMBA, Cambridge Judge EMBA, INSEAD GEMBA, Kellogg EMBA, MIT Sloan EMBA, etc. Some top Indian programs like ISB’s Post Graduate Programme for Executives and IIMB’s PGPEM also accept GMAT/EA interchangeably.


What is the IPMAT Exam used for?

IIM Indore IPM Aptitude Test - IPMAT is the entrance test for the 5-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) at IIM Indore (Mumbai) and 5-year IPM programs at a few other schools. It combines undergraduate (BBA) and MBA, awarding a dual BBA+MBA degree. It’s highly competitive and the first step to a 5-year IIM Indore management education.


Format & Structure: IPMAT is a 120-minute CBT with 3 sections (40 minutes each). Typically it has ~90 questions total (about 30 per section). The sections often cover Quantitative Aptitude (including arithmetic, algebra, geometry), Data Interpretation, and Verbal Ability (English Grammar, Verbal Reasoning, RC).


IPMAT Eligibility: Only class-12 pass or appearing candidates (under age 20) can apply. There is usually a minimum percentage requirement in 10th/12th (often 60%), but specifics depend on the admissions brochure.


IPMAT Scoring: Each correct answer is +4, each wrong is –1 (for MCQs). Non-MCQ questions typically have no negative marking (IIM Indore introduced non-MCQ questions with no penalty). Final merit is based on weighted score of IPMAT (65% weight), 12th grade (15%), and PI/WAT (20%).


IPMAT Important Dates & Fees (2025): IPMAT 2025 was held on May 12, 2025 (IIM Indore’s schedule). Registration typically runs Feb–Apr. The exam fee is about ₹4,130 for General/NC-OBC (and half for SC/ST/PwD).


Top B-schools Accepting It: Clearing IPMAT Indore guarantees admission to IIM Indore’s 5-year IPM program. What is the SNAP Exam for?

Symbiosis National Aptitude Test, SNAP is the MBA entrance test for the Symbiosis International University (SIU) group of institutes. Over 16 MBA programs across 11 institutes use SNAP scores, including top ones like SIBM Pune, SCMHRD Pune, SIBM Bangalore, SIOM Nashik, SIIB Pune, and SICSR Pune. SNAP is popular in Maharashtra; it offers multiple slots and the ability to retake (best score used).


Format & Structure: SNAP is a 60-minute online test with 60 questions. There are 3 sections:

  • General English (RC, Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Ability) – 15 Q

  • Analytical & Logical Reasoning – 25 Q (snaptest.org)

  • Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency – 20 Q

SNAP Test Scoring: Scores are converted to percentile. High percentiles (e.g. 90+ for SIBM Pune) are needed for top Symbiosis institutes.

SNAP is held in December (three slots: e.g. Dec 6, 14, 20, 2025). Registration usually opens a few months prior (Sept/Oct). The fee for one exam is around ₹3,000. Candidates can take up to 3 attempts in Dec; only the highest score counts.

Other School-Specific Exams

  • IIM Bangalore Test (PGPEM/PhD): IIMB has its own test used for admission to programs like the Post Graduate Program in Enterprise Management (PGPEM, a two-year executive MBA) and certain PhD tracks. Called the IIMB Test, it typically covers Quant, Verbal, and Data Interpretation, similar in style to other management exams (iimb.ac.in). (IIMB also accepts GMAT/GRE for these programs, but provides the in-house test option as well.)

  • Other Institute Tests: Some programs have unique admissions tests. For example, NMIMS Mumbai (apart from NMAT) has reduced weight on NMAT and is introducing its own tests for certain programs. Always check individual schools (like Great Lakes, KJ Somaiya, etc.) for any in-house exam requirements or alternate pathways.


What is the Business Admissions Test (BAT™)?

That’s the idea behind the Business Admissions Test (BAT™): a purpose-built admissions tool designed for graduate business programmes worldwide that evaluates readiness for the academic rigour of an MBA and the practical judgement needed for management.

  • Frequency and Mode: CAT and XAT occur once a year on fixed dates (e.g. CAT in November, XAT in January), and SNAP in December. NMAT is available in a window (Nov–Dec) and EA/GMAT/GRE are offered year-round by appointment. All exams today are computer-based. Section navigation differs: CAT/XAT/SNAP have fixed sectional time limits (e.g. CAT’s strict 40-minute segments, whereas GMAT Focus allows you to choose section order but does not allow skipping back, making time-per-question management crucial. GRE is section-adaptive, allowing skipping within a section and reshuffling Verbal/Quant order after AWA.

  • Sections Tested: Indian tests emphasize Verbal, Data Reasoning, and Quant in one sitting. Notably, Decision Making is unique to XAT, and SNAP does not have GK or Essay sections. GMAT/GRE include integrated reasoning/writing components.

Which Exam is Right for You?

Choosing the right exam depends on your profile and goals:

  • Targeting IIMs/Top Indian MBA: Take CAT (compulsory for IIMs) and perhaps XAT (for XLRI/XLIM programs). Also consider NMAT/SNAP if applying to NMIMS or Symbiosis, respectively.

  • Aiming for International MBA: Focus on GMAT or GRE. GMAT is the traditional business exam (accepted at 7,000+ programs. GRE is also widely accepted (1,300+ programs and useful if you might pursue other master’s. If very strong in vocabulary and still open to science MS, GRE can be strategic.

  • Career Shift/No Work-Ex: Fresh graduates can take any – CAT/XAT for India, GRE/GMAT for abroad. A good strategy is to attempt both CAT and GMAT/GRE to keep options wide (many students do CAT plus one global exam).

  • Working Professional/Executive: For EMBA, the EA or GMAT are ideal. Many EMBA programs accept either GMAT or the Executive Assessment (EA). If targeting programs like Wharton/Booth/Kellogg EMBA, use EA as it is designed for executives. If programs allow, GMAT works too.

  • Integrated/Undergrad Mgmt: If you aim for a 5-year program after 12th, take IPMAT (for IIM Indore/Ranchi IPM) or IPMAT Rohtak for IIM Rohtak.

  • Symbiosis Institutes: Take SNAP (scores needed by SIBM, SCMHRD, etc.).
