ISB MBA APPLICATION Guide for the CLASS OF 2027–28. By Shruti P, ISB admission consultant, ISB PGP, Stanford LEAD, Ranked 9th, Top MBA Admissions Consultants of 2026, Poets & Quants.
Last updated: May 2026, Source: Official ISB Application Portal, Class of 2027–28
The ISB application is not a form.It is a filter, and most applicants misunderstand what they are being evaluated on. Every year, candidates approach ISB with strong GMAT scores, credible work experience, and well-meaning essays. And yet, a large percentage of them do not make it past the shortlist stage. Not because they lack capability, but because they misread the application.
The candidates who get in are not always the highest scoring. They are the ones who present clarity, self-awareness, and direction. This is GOALisB’s complete application guide for the ISB Class of 2027–28, covering eligibility, deadlines, essays, GMAT, recommendations, scholarships, and most importantly, how to approach each component strategically. If you are applying this year, or planning your application over the next cycle, this is where you should start.
The Indian School of Business is one of the most competitive and transformative MBA programmes in Asia. The application process is where that journey begins, and how you approach it determines everything that follows.
This is GOALisB's complete, step-by-step guide to the ISB application for the Class of 2027–28. If you want a broader overview of the programme itself before diving in, start with our ISB complete guide. This blog focuses specifically on the application, every section, every requirement, every strategic consideration.
Whether you are figuring out how to apply to ISB for the first time, or returning with a stronger profile (read our ISB reapplication strategy guide if that is you), this guide covers eligibility, deadlines, essays, GMAT requirements, recommendations, scholarships, fees, and a complete checklist. GOALisB is an independent admissions consulting firm and is not affiliated with ISB.
01 ISB MBA: WHAT YOU ARE APPLYING TO
The ISB MBA is a one-year, full-time residential programme. If you are still deciding whether the one-year format is right for you, our blog on whether ISB is a 1-year or 2-year MBA covers that in detail. The programme runs across two campuses — Hyderabad and Mohali — under a 'One School, Two Campuses' philosophy. Campus preference is collected at application time, but ISB allocates at its own discretion.
ISB is ranked consistently among the top business schools in Asia. Its one-year format suits mid-career professionals who cannot take two years away from their careers. For a deeper look at what an ISB MBA does for your career, including salary outcomes and post-MBA trajectories, we have written about that separately. The average ISB MBA salary and ISB placement statistics are among the most searched data points for applicants evaluating the programme.
For campus-specific information, we have detailed guides on ISB Hyderabad and ISB Mohali. If you are weighing the two, our ISB Hyderabad vs ISB Mohali comparison breaks down the differences in cohort composition, club ecosystem, and post-MBA access.
If you are also considering global programmes, we have head-to-head comparisons of ISB vs INSEAD, ISB vs London Business School, and ISB vs HEC Paris. For those comparing within India, see ISB vs IIM Bangalore and ISB vs IIM Calcutta.

02 ISB ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: WHO CAN APPLY
ISB is clear about its minimum eligibility requirements. For the full eligibility breakdown, see our dedicated blog on ISB MBA eligibility. Here is what every applicant must meet:
What is the ISB eligibility criteria for 2026–27?
The Four ISB Eligibility Requirements
A bachelor's or undergraduate degree in any discipline, or a professional qualification equivalent — CA, CS, or equivalent
A minimum of two years of full-time work experience as on 31 March 2027 — the official ISB work experience cut-off date
A valid GMAT or GRE score from a test centre — online or at-home scores are not accepted under any circumstances
TOEFL or IELTS score, if English was not the primary language of instruction for your undergraduate degree
ISB WORK EXPERIENCE CUT-OFF DATE The eligibility cut-off is 31 March 2027. The portal auto-calculates your current role's end date to this cut-off. ISB verifies all work experience post-admission through an independent agency. |
If you have exactly 3 years of experience and are wondering whether that changes your positioning, read our analysis of ISB admission with 3 years of work experience. For very early-career candidates with less than 2 years of experience, the ISB Early Entry Option (EEO) was the deferred entry pathway — though note this has been restructured; check the ISB website for current status.
ISB Eligibility for Chartered Accountants
CA articleship — mandatory under ICAI guidelines at 2 to 3 years — may be listed as 'part-time' in Education and 'full-time' in Professional Experience. However, CA articleship does not count toward the two-year eligibility requirement. Post-qualification full-time experience is needed.
ISB Eligibility for Medical Professionals
The mandatory one-year MBBS/BDS internship is treated as education, not work experience. A Master's degree in Medical, Dental, or Physiotherapy is classified as part-time study and its full duration counts as full-time professional experience.
ISB Application for Non-Traditional Profiles and Reapplicants
If your background falls outside the typical IT-finance-consulting profile, read our guide on ISB admission for non-traditional profiles. And if you are returning after a previous application, our ISB reapplication strategy guide is essential reading — including the story of a reapplicant who secured a 50% ISB scholarship on reapplication.
For a second MBA at ISB, we have covered whether pursuing a second MBA at ISB makes sense for candidates who already hold a management qualification. And if profile building is where you need to start, our guide on profile building for ISB admission covers how to systematically strengthen each component of your application over time.
03. ISB APPLICATION DEADLINES 2026–27: THREE ROUNDS EXPLAINED
ISB evaluates applications in three rounds for the Class of 2027–28. For a comprehensive overview of the ISB admission process and how the rounds fit into the broader timeline, that guide covers the full cycle from application to enrolment.
Round 1 20 September 2026 Recommender deadline: 25 Sep 2026 Largest scholarship pool | Round 2 6 December 2026 Recommender deadline: check portal Strong seat availability , good scholarships | Round 3 17 January 2027 Recommender deadline: check portal Final round, limited seats & scholarships |
ISB ROUND 1 VS ROUND 2 VS ROUND 3: WHICH IS BEST? Round 1 is the strategically optimal choice if your application is ready — it carries the largest scholarship pool and the most interview slots. Round 2 is a strong alternative for candidates who need more time to prepare. Round 3 is viable, but seats and scholarship availability narrow considerably. There is no penalty for a later round, but there are real trade-offs. See our full ISB application process breakdown for more context on how each round works. |
Applications submitted after the Round 1 deadline of 20 September 2026 automatically roll into Round 2. Applications submitted after 6 December 2026 roll into Round 3. ISB cannot accept applications for the Class of 2028 after 17 January 2027. For answers to common procedural questions, our FAQ on the ISB application process covers the most frequently asked questions about timelines, portal issues, and document requirements.
04. HOW ISB EVALUATES APPLICATIONS: THE HOLISTIC FRAMEWORK
ISB follows a merit-based admissions policy built on holistic evaluation.
How does ISB evaluate applications?
The ISB admission process covers each stage in detail, from application submission through shortlisting to the interview. Here is what the committee considers:
Academic performance — undergraduate GPA, degree, institutional context
Work experience — quality, progression, impact, functional diversity, and seniority
Awards and achievements — professional, academic, extracurricular, community
Essays — reflective thinking, communication quality, narrative authenticity
Recommendations — third-party perspective on performance, potential, and character
GMAT or GRE scores — standardised indicator of quantitative and verbal readiness
Interview — for shortlisted candidates only, face-to-face or via Zoom
One component worth knowing about is the ISB BAT test — the Business Aptitude Test used in the ISB MFAB application contexts. If you are not comfortable with GMAT or GRE you can alternatively apply to ISB MFAB with the BAT test. Separately, understanding what nailing the ISB admission actually looks like in practice is often better understood through applicant stories than through frameworks.
GOALISB INSIGHTS Across the applications we have worked on, the single most consistent differentiator between shortlisted and rejected candidates at similar GMAT score ranges is essay quality. Applicants with scores at the lower end of the competitive range but with specific, honest, story-driven essays regularly outperform higher-scoring applicants with generic, CV-recitation essays. The GMAT gets you in the door. The essays make the decision. This is consistent whether the candidate is an IT professional, a CA, an ONGC engineer, or a banker — the pattern holds across profiles. |
05 ISB APPLICATION: EDUCATION SECTION — WHAT TO ENTER AND HOW
The Education section requires accurate documentation of all academic qualifications. Before you fill it in, review our guide on ISB MBA eligibility to confirm your qualifications meet the bar. For applicants who came to ISB through a non-standard academic route, the story of an engineering professional's journey to ISB illustrates how unconventional academic backgrounds are evaluated.
Key Rules for the ISB Education Section
Enter qualifications in reverse chronological order — latest first
At least one bachelor's, integrated, or professional degree is mandatory
If your institution is not on the dropdown, raise a service request via 'Got Queries?'
Study Abroad and exchange programmes should not be listed separately — they appear in your home institution's transcripts
Transcripts not in English must be merged with an accurate translation into a single PDF
Certificate programmes and short courses belong in 'Other Courses', not the main Education section
If you hold two undergraduate degrees, one goes in the UG section and the second in 'Other Courses'
No two activities can be listed as full-time in the same or overlapping period
CGPA ACCURACY — CRITICAL The CGPA or percentage you enter must match your official marksheet exactly, to two decimal places. If your CGPA is 8.562, enter 8.56 — not 8.5, not 8.6. Inconsistencies flagged during background verification have derailed otherwise strong applications. |
06 ISB APPLICATION: HOW TO ENTER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND COMPENSATION
The Professional Experience section is where ISB builds a detailed picture of your career. Include everything — full-time roles, internships, on-campus jobs, self-employment, and traineeships. Only full-time experience counts toward eligibility, but part-time work adds texture to your profile and should be included.
If your background is in a specialised industry, we have written application guides tailored to your context: ISB application for entrepreneurs, ISB application for infrastructure professionals, ISB application for oil and gas professionals, ISB application strategies for healthcare professionals, and ISB application for e-commerce and retail professionals. Each covers how to frame sector-specific experience in the ISB context.
Rules for Entering Work Experience in the ISB Application
Enter your current or most recent role first
No two activities can be marked full-time in the same or overlapping period
If you work simultaneously for an employer and in a startup or family business, mark only one as full-time; the rest are part-time
If multiple part-time roles together total 40+ hours per week, mark the primary as full-time and others as part-time
How to Calculate Annual Compensation for the ISB Application
Component | How to Include |
Base salary | Monthly gross × 12 |
Bonus / Variable pay | Add the full annual bonus amount |
ESOPs / RSUs / Shares | Add the annual vested value |
Other variable components | Add if applicable |
COMPENSATION DOCUMENTS MUST MATCH EXACTLY Upload last 3 months' payslips plus your offer letter, revision letter, or compensation letter. If your payslip does not reflect bonus or variable pay, attach a separate compensation letter. For self-employed applicants: self-declaration, last 12 months' income, bank statement, and P&L statement. |
07 AWARDS, ACTIVITIES AND NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE ISB APPLICATION
The Awards and Activities section is your opportunity to bring forward dimensions of your profile that exist outside your degree and job title. Our guide on profile building for ISB admission covers how to think about this section strategically — both for current applicants and for those building their profile over a longer horizon.
What to Include in ISB Application, Awards and Achievements Section?
Sports medals at district, state, national, or international level
Professional awards — best performer recognition, industry honours, institutional awards
Academic honours — scholarships, merit certificates, university ranks
Community and social impact — NGO involvement, sustained volunteering, initiatives led
Participation in competitions, hackathons, case contests
Granted patents, published research, peer-reviewed contributions
HOW TO FLAG NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS For significant milestones — national or international sports medals, military honours, granted patents — click 'Notable Achievements' in the application. This option appears when you select State, National, or International in the participation level dropdown. Attach supporting documents. |
08 ISB ESSAY QUESTIONS 2026–27: STRATEGY FOR ALL THREE PROMPTS
The ISB essays are where applications are won or lost. For a dedicated deep-dive on how to write an ISB essay, we have a full guide covering structure, tone, and the most common mistakes. It is also worth reading about how ISB essay topics have evolved over the years to understand what the admissions committee consistently looks for beneath changing prompts.
What are the ISB essay topics for 2027-28 application?
There are two mandatory essays and one optional essay for the Class of 2027–28.
Essay 1 · Mandatory · 400 words Word limit: 400 words What unique experiences have shaped who you are? What have these experiences taught you about leadership and the kind of leader you aspire to be? GOALisB Strategy Note: This is an experience essay, not a leadership philosophy essay. Ground your response in one or two specific, defining moments. The leadership insight must emerge organically from the story. Applicants who open with 'I am a collaborative leader...' before telling any story lose the reader immediately. |
Essay 2 · Mandatory · 400 words Word limit: 400 words What intellectual experiences have influenced your approach to learning and have led you to pursue an MBA? Please describe using anecdotes from your own experiences. GOALisB Strategy Note: The operative word is 'anecdotes'. ISB is explicitly asking for story — not rationale, not a career plan. Show your intellectual curiosity in action. The MBA decision should feel like an inevitable conclusion from the journey you describe. |
Essay 3 · Optional · 250 words Word limit: 250 words Share with us any intellectual pursuits, unique perspectives, or experiences that you pursued that have shaped your worldview, your growth through these pursuits, and how they could potentially contribute to our learning community. GOALisB Strategy Note: Write this only if you have a genuine dimension not covered in Essays 1 and 2. A strong Essay 3 adds real colour. A repetitive one does active harm. When in doubt, leave it blank. |
PROCESS NOTE Save each essay manually every time you draft. The ISB portal does not auto-save. Losing a polished essay to a browser timeout has derailed more applications than you would expect. |
For real-world examples of what strong ISB essays and applications look like, read the admit stories of candidates who navigated this process successfully: an ISB MBA admission journey, how one applicant aced the ISB admissions process, a banking professional's journey to ISB and IIMA PGPX, and how one candidate secured both ISB and IIMA PGPX admits. Each story carries specific lessons about what made the application work.
What to Actively Avoid in the ISB Essays?
Opening lines that state your conclusion before telling your story
Corporate filler language — synergies, leverage, stakeholder management — without substance beneath
Career summaries masquerading as essays
Goals statements generic enough to apply to any applicant at any school
Em dashes, bullet points, or subheadings inside essay responses — ISB wants prose
09 ISB RECOMMENDATION LETTER: WHO TO CHOOSE, WHAT THEY ARE ASKED, HOW TO BRIEF THEM
ISB requires two recommendations, submitted through the online portal. For answers to common questions about recommender selection and submission, our FAQ on the ISB application process covers these in detail.
Who Should Write Your ISB Recommendation Letter?
Direct and current supervisors are strongly preferred. The admissions committee wants first-hand perspective on your day-to-day performance, collaborative ability, and growth potential.
Past supervisors or managers, if your current supervisor cannot be approached for confidentiality reasons
Professional colleagues who can speak specifically to your impact
Clients, if you are an entrepreneur or work in a family business
Professors who can speak to your professional potential — not just grades
COMMON MISCONCEPTION ISB alumni do not receive additional weight as recommenders. Choose based on quality of relationship and depth of observation — not prestige or alumni status. |
Logistics and Deadlines
The recommender's email must be a professional or corporate ID
Alert your recommender to check Spam and Junk folders, and to add pgpadmissions@isb.edu to their contacts
The recommender deadline for Round 1 is 25 September 2026 — five days after the application deadline
Ensuring timely submission is your responsibility, not your recommender's
Avoid changing recommenders after submitting — change requests take up to 48 hours via 'Got Queries?'

How to Brief Your Recommenders for Maximum Impact?
Share the essay prompts with your recommender. Walk them through two or three specific examples you want referenced. Give them a clear picture of your ISB goals. A recommender who understands the full context writes a specific, differentiated recommendation, not a templated one.
010 GMAT AND GRE FOR ISB: SCORE REQUIREMENTS, VALIDITY, AND SUBMISSION
A valid GMAT or GRE score is a non-negotiable requirement. For full eligibility context, see our ISB MBA eligibility guide. One less widely known assessment in the ISB ecosystem is the ISB BAT (Business Aptitude Test) — worth understanding even if it is not part of the standard application for most candidates.
GMAT vs GRE for ISB: Which Should You Take?
ISB accepts both GMAT Focus Edition and GRE equally. The choice should be driven by your aptitude profile. Take a diagnostic for both before deciding.
School code | N2D-J5-01 |
Score validity | 5 years from test date |
Sections scored | Verbal · Quantitative · Data Insights |
Online mode | NOT accepted by ISB |
Official report | Request via mba.com · allow 2 weeks |
What GMAT Score Do You Need for ISB?
ISB does not publish an official minimum. Competitive GMAT Focus scores in recent cohorts range from approximately 555 to 765, with the average being 669 and the median GMAT focus edition score being 675, with quantitative performance weighted heavily. A high GMAT score does not guarantee admission, and a lower score does not preclude a strong candidacy when paired with exceptional essays and recommendations.
CRITICAL TIMING WARNING ISB requires the official score report from GMAC or ETS before your application is considered for shortlisting. Official reports take approximately two weeks to arrive after you request them. Request your official score at least 3–4 weeks before your round deadline. |
011 ISB SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID: MERIT, NEED, AND DIVERSITY
ISB offers scholarships based on merit, need, and diversity. For the complete breakdown of what is available, our dedicated guide on ISB scholarships covers amounts, conditions, and how to maximise your chances. The reapplicant scholarship stories are particularly instructive — we have covered one candidate who secured a 50% scholarship on ISB reapplication, which illustrates what a differentiated reapplicant profile can achieve.
Which ISB Scholarship should you apply to?
Scholarship Type | How to Apply and What It Covers |
Merit Scholarship | Automatically considered based on your application. No separate application required. |
Diversity Scholarship | Automatically considered. Awarded for underrepresented backgrounds — gender, geography, industry, or education type. |
Need-Based Scholarship | Requires a separate application. The link appears in your portal only after your main ISB application has been submitted. |
MULTIPLE SCHOLARSHIPS: WHAT HAPPENS If you receive more than one scholarship offer, only the highest amount is honoured — the others are automatically revoked. Scholarship recipients must submit a testimonial for donor and audit purposes; failure to do so results in the scholarship being withdrawn. |
012 ISB APPLICATION FEE, ADMISSION FEE, AND REFUND POLICY EXPLAINED
For a complete breakdown of all programme costs, our ISB MBA fees guide covers total programme expenses across tuition, accommodation, and living costs. To contextualise the investment: according to the official ISB Class of 2026 Placement Report, the average salary for ISB MBA graduates stood at ₹37.29 LPA, with 1,117 job offers made across 808 graduating students. Below are the key payment milestones specific to the application and admission process.
ISB DEFERRAL POLICY Deferral is considered case-by-case for medical emergencies or significant professional reasons only. Approved for one year maximum. Do not remit the commitment fee if a deferral request has been approved — the commitment fee is non-refundable under all circumstances. |
013 AFTER THE ISB OFFER: BACKGROUND VERIFICATION AND ENROLMENT
Background Verification
ISB conducts thorough background verification for all admitted candidates through an independent agency — academic scores, employment history, and compensation details are all checked against submitted documents.
Campus Life and Post-MBA
For a realistic picture of what the ISB experience looks like on the ground, our guides on life at ISB and life after ISB are worth reading before you commit. For campus-specific details, see ISB Hyderabad, ISB Mohali, and the ISB Hyderabad vs Mohali comparison. And for the experiential learning components of the programme, we have written about the i.Venture Immersive (IVI) at ISB and the Field Global Immersion separately.

015 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ISB APPLICATION
Short, direct answers to the questions GOALisB receives most often from ISB applicants.
What is the minimum work experience required for ISB?
Two years of full-time work experience as on 31 March 2027. See our full breakdown of ISB MBA eligibility criteria for all requirements including special cases for CAs and medical professionals.
Does ISB accept online GMAT or GRE scores?
No. ISB accepts only test centre-based scores. Online or at-home tests are not accepted. No exceptions.
What GMAT score is needed for ISB?
ISB does not publish a minimum. Competitive GMAT Focus scores in recent cohorts range from approximately 675+. Quant performance is particularly important. That said, the ISB application is genuinely holistic — see how a banking professional secured both ISB and IIMA PGPX with a profile-driven application.
Is Round 1 better than Round 2 for ISB?
Generally yes, Round 1 has a fresh slate for a new year's intake, so if a school is taking in 30% engineers, then the complete pool is available in round 1, which would be available in round 1. But a polished Round 2 application is substantially better than a rushed Round 1 one. Read our detailed ISB application process guide for round-by-round strategy.
Can a CA apply to ISB without a bachelor's degree?
Yes. CA and CS qualifications are accepted as equivalent to a bachelor's degree. But CA articleship does not count toward the two-year experience requirement. See our ISB eligibility guide for details.
How many recommendations does ISB require?
One recommendation, submitted directly through the ISB portal by the recommenders themselves. Both must come from professional contacts. The recommender deadline for Round 1 is 25 September 2026. For common questions, see our ISB application process FAQ.
Do ISB alumni get extra weight as recommenders?
No. ISB is explicit - recommendations from ISB alumni carry no additional weight. Choose based on quality of relationship and specificity of observation.
What is the ISB application fee and total programme cost?
The application fee is non-refundable and due at submission. The admission fee is Rs 3,00,000 + GST, payable after an offer. Our ISB MBA fees guide covers the complete programme cost including tuition, accommodation, and living expenses.
What careers does an ISB MBA lead to?
ISB graduates enter a wide range of post-MBA careers. For specific trajectories, read our guides on a consulting career post ISB and ISB MBA career options in product management. The ISB placement statistics and average ISB MBA salary data are also worth reviewing before applying.
What is ISB's deferral policy?
Deferral is considered case-by-case for medical emergencies or significant professional reasons, for one year only. Do not remit the commitment fee if a deferral request has been approved — it is non-refundable under all circumstances.
What happens at the ISB interview?
Interviews are conducted for shortlisted candidates only — face-to-face or via Zoom. Our dedicated guide on the ISB interview process covers what is asked, how to prepare, and how to approach the conversation.
Is the ISB optional Essay 3 really optional?
Yes, and ISB means it. Write Essay 3 only if you have a genuine dimension not covered elsewhere in your application. Read our guide on how to write an ISB essay for detailed guidance on all three prompts.
FINAL WORD FROM GOALISB The ISB application is not a form-filling exercise. It is a strategic exercise in self-presentation. Every section — from the compensation field to Essay 1 — tells the admissions committee something about who you are and how you think. The most successful applicants approach the application the way they approach a high-stakes professional deliverable: with clarity, rigour, and authenticity.
